WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 - September 24 / 2000

-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-

Last week on WPW Sunday Night; Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit had a war of words resulting in a tag team match pitting Angle and Mike Awesome against Chris Benoit and Ken Shamrock.  Angle got a controversial pin on Benoit in this match.  Steve Blackman explained his reunion with Al Snow as that Snow finally got serious.  The Unholy Alliance beat T&A then the two teams brawled with The Hardy Boyz.  Grandmaster Sexay turned on Scottie Too Hottie during a match with Scottie and Kaz Hayashi.  The Hardy Boyz retained the World Tag Team Titles in a great match over Juventud Guerrera and Papi Chulo.  Chris Jericho faced Sting in the Main Event with the WPW World Heavyweight Title not on the line.  Jericho was in trouble and Triple H tried to interfere but ended up hitting Jericho with a chair by mistake.  Sting took advantage and got the pin on the champion...

"Spit It Out" by Slipknot played in the background as the WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 graphic comes up on the screen then fades away but not completely as a fast paced montage of WPW action including; Masato Tanaka hitting the Roaring Elbow on Mike Awesome, Al Snow smashing away at Sting's arm with a chair, Booker T drilling Kurt Angle with a Neckwrecker, The Acolytes putting Jeff Hardy through a table, the LWO beating down an opponent, Ken Shamrock with the Ankle Lock on Triple H, Mike Awesome with an Over-The-Top-Rope Awesome Bomb, Kidman pinning Ric Flair, Sting hitting the Scorpion Death Drop on Al Snow, Kurt Angle with all his gold, Chris Benoit raising the King Of Kings trophy, The Hardy Boyz with the Twist Of Fate and Swanton Bomb, Triple H hitting the Pedigree on Goldberg, Chris Jericho hitting a Lionsault on Goldberg, Goldberg spearing Jericho, Mick Foley hitting Goldberg in the head with a chair and much, much more.  The WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 logo fades back into full then explodes...

"Welcome To The Fold" by Filter started us off this week as the Owner of the WPW, Mick Foley led 'The Elite' of Chris Jericho, Triple H, and Kidman out to the ring.  The Elite entered the ring where Mick Foley would take a microphone...

Mick Foley:  "There has been a lot of talk over the past week that there is dissention within the ranks of The Elite but that simply is not the case.  I repeat, there is *NO* dissention within The Elite.  Last week, mistakes were made and Sting got lucky.  Because of that, tonight I have booked in the Main Event in a Non-Title match, "Y2J" Chris Jericho against Booker T.  Chris, this is an opportunity to redeem yourself..."

Chris Jericho:  "Wait a second there, Mickey.  Redeem myself?  I think someone within 'The Elite' needs to redeem themselves after last week and it's not Y2J..."

Mick Foley:  "Now that's just about enough, there is no blame to be placed after last week, it was an aboration of justice.  We move forward tonight with your match against Booker T."

Triple H:  "Jericho, what happened last week was a simple mistake, a mistake I should not have made because The Game simply does not make mistakes because I am that damn good..."

Chris Jericho:  "Booker T, tonight you are nothing but a big j-brone for the World Heavyweight Champion and after I get done with you, maybe you can join Goldberg in loserville.  Triple H, if last week was a mistake, make sure that it never eh...eh...EVER happens A-GAIN!"

We would then go to the announcers table where Scott Hudson and Jerry Lawler talked about the lineup for tonights show which will include 'The Canadian Crippler' Chris Benoit against Mike Awesome and the Intercontinental Champion, Kurt Angle defending against Masato Tanaka plus a whole lot more...

Opening Match: The Acolytes v. The F.B.I.  "Ironman" by Black Sabbath blasted through the loudspeakers as The Acolytes, Faarooq and Bradshaw made their way out to the ring.  Then, "Stayin' Alive [Remix]" by N-Trance brought The F.B.I. of Guido Maritato and Tony Mamaluke out to the ring.  Guido and Mamaluke would have to stay quick and arial in this match using lots of double team maneuvers against the much stronger and bigger Acolytes.  The F.B.I. were semi-succesful and went all out.  However, when Bradshaw nailed Maritato with his Clothesline From Hell it was lights out for the youngster as Bradshaw covered him for the one, two, three.  The Acolytes show their sheer strength and brutality in victory.

WINNERS: The Acolytes in 3:10.

Rating: * 3/4

"Full Of Hell" by Entombed came over the loudspeakers as Grandmaster Sexay walked out of the entrance in black jeans and no shirt.  Sexay had his hair died black without the streaks.  Sexay got into the ring and took the microphone...

Grandmaster Sexay:  "Shut up!  A year or more ago, I formed an alliance, a tag team with Scott Taylor, Scotty Too Hotty, and we set out to become the top tag team in professional wrestling but somewhere between then and now it changed.  We adopted the Too Cool persona and became a joke, a sideshow.  These people came here to see us dance and to see Scotty do the WORM and it pissed me off.  We were getting nowhere and that pissed me the hell off and it should've pissed you off, too Scotty but it didn't.  All you care about is having a good time out here and pleasing these fans but that simply is not ENOUGH for me.  I want to be the best so on this day, September 17th, Grandmaster Sexay dies and Brian Christopher is here.  There will be no more dancing, there will be no more fun and I start with you, Scotty and it ends when I'm on top of this business..."

"Country Grammar" by Nelly then blared over the PA and after a few moments, Scotty "Too Hotty" Taylor walked out of the entrance with a microphone...

Scotty:  "Brian, you're right, all I care about is if these people have a good time or not but that doesn't mean that I still can't go out and win at the same time.  The fact of the matter is that you were the weak link in our team, you can't and couldn't control your temper and it cost us many matches so it's time we find out the question on everyone's minds, who's better Scotty "Too Hotty" Taylor or Brian Christopher?"

Scotty then ran into the ring and started brawling with Brian Christopher back and forth until T&A (!) hit the ring and laid out Taylor!  They held Taylor as Christopher nailed him with the Superkick!  Trish Stratus would then enter the ring and hug Brian Christopher as Christopher, T&A and Trish left together.  Has a new alliance been formed?

Match #2: Dean Malenko (c) v. Stoker Ichikawa - WPW Television Title.  We returned with the challenger and newcomer Stoker Ichikawa into the ring.  Then, "Change" by Deftone sounded as the WPW Television Champion, "The Shooter" Dean Malenko walked out to the ring.  Malenko is a fighting champion and takes on all comers.  Ichikawa showed some good skill in this match but Malenko focused on Ichikawa's back for much of the match softening him up.  Ichikawa would attempt a flying bodypress but Malenko rolled through, got up then locked Ichikawa in the Texas Cloverleaf for the convincing submission win.  Dean Malenko retains his WPW Television Title and afterwards into the camera invited all challengers.

WINNER: Dean Malenko in 5:33.

Rating: ** 1/2

(Dean Malenko retained the WPW Television Title.)

Backstage, Scotty Taylor demanded some interview time...

Scotty Taylor:  "Brian Christopher, T&A, you want to jump me from behind?  You want to play that game well I'll play that game, too.  Tonight, bring all three of your asses out to the ring because I've got two partners ready, willing and able to kick your asses right here tonight and Brian Christopher, maybe you'll get your first taste of the WORM right here tonight..."

Match #3: Mike Awesome v. Chris Benoit.  "Awesome" by Reckless Fortune sounded as Mike Awesome stalked his way out to the ring first for our next matchup.  Then, "Surfacing" by Slipknot blasted through the loudspeakers as "The Crippler" Chris Benoit made his way out to the ring to a sizeable pop from the crowd.  Benoit got into the ring and stepped right into Awesome's face.  Benoit doesn't back down from anyone or any fight no matter how big or how tough his opponent is supposed to be.  Awesome and Benoit brawled back and forth until Awesome took control.  Awesome hit some power moves until Benoit went to the mat and worked over Awesome on the ground.  This would be a very good back and forth match between the two men as they both pulled out all the stops.  The ending would see Awesome knock Benoit out of the ring with a shoulderblock then ran and jumped over the top rope with a tope but Benoit moved out of the way.  Benoit rolled into the ring, bounced off the ropes and dove through the ropes with a tope nailing Awesome.  Both men were down on the outside for a few seconds until Benoit rolled in and broke the count.  KEN SHAMROCK would then run out with a steel chair and nail Mike Awesome in the back with it.  Shamrock stomped away on Awesome as the referee called for the DQ on Benoit.  Benoit was furious and rolled to outside yelling at Shamrock, "What're you doing?"  Shamrock said it was payback for Awesome.  Benoit told Shamrock to get his payback some other time and stay out of his matches.  Shamrock apoligized and offered a handshake to Benoit, Benoit accepted it and the two walked to towards the back when Kurt Angle came out and blindsided Benoit with a chair to the head!  Shamrock grabbed the chair from Kurt and Angle backed away knowing the damage to Benoit was already done.

WINNER: Mike Awesome via DQ in 8:49.

Rating *** 3/4

Backstage, Michael Cole questioned Kurt Angle calling it another cowardly attack by Angle on Benoit...

Kurt Angle:  "Cowardly?  How dare you Michael Cole, a third string wrestling announcer and joke of a physical specimen question the integriy of an American Hero like that?  Now if you don't mind I have an Intercontinental Title defense up next and I will retain the title, it's true."

Match #4: Kurt Angle (c) v. Masato Tanaka - WPW Intercontinental Title.  'D A N G U N' brought the challenger, Masato Tanaka out to the ring first for our next matchup.  Then, "My Hero" by Foo Fighters sounded as the WPW Intercontinental Champion, 'The Olympic Gold Medalist' Kurt Angle emerged from the entrance.  Tanaka took to the mat a bit more in this match adapting to Angle's ground based style but Tanaka also threw in some of his trademark brawling.  The closing moments of the match would see Angle go for a belly-to-belly suplex but Tanaka kneed Angle a few times then drilled him with a power bomb for two.  Tanaka waited for Angle to get up and nailed him with a running forearm smash for another two count.  Tanaka waited on Angle again and this time went for the ROARING ELBOW but Angle ducked down and backdropped Tanaka to the floor.  At this point, Angle distracted the referee while Steve Blackman came out with a kendo stick and worked into Tanaka with several shots then rolled him in.  Angle would then hit the Angleplex on Tanaka for the one-two-three!  Kurt Angle retains the WPW I-C Title over Tanaka.

WINNER: Kurt Angle in 5:54.

Rating: ** 1/2

(Kurt Angle retained the WPW Intercontinental Title.)

Immediatley afterwards as Kurt started to celebrate Benoit raced into the ring and leveled Angle with a lariat.  Benoit sat on Angle pounding on him with right hands then locked him in the Crippler Crossface until officials came out and pulled Benoit off.  The Crippler has gained revenge on the Intercontinental Champion.

Match #5: Brian Christopher & T&A v. Scotty Taylor & ???.  "Full Of Hell" by Entombed blared over the PA as Trish Stratus led Brian Christopher and T&A out to the ring.  Then, "Country Grammar" by Nelly blared over the PA as Scotty "Too Hotty" Taylor walked out then stopped short of the ring.  "Bombtrack" by Rage Against The Machine would then blast over the loudspeakers as The Unholy Alliance stepped out of the back and stood by Scotty then all three charged the ring and started the brawl.  The match settled down for a few minutes then broke out again with Test and Whipwreck going at it on the inside.  Test went for a power bomb but Whipwreck dropped out, kicked Test and went for the Whippersnapper but Brian Christopher rolled in and hit Whipwreck with a superkick.  Scotty pulled Christopher out and the two kept going at it.  Test went up to the top rope and nailed the Flying Elbowdrop for the one, two, and three!  The brawl continued on the outside until officials ran down and broke this one up.  The intensity factor is sure turned up here tonight.

WINNER: Brian Christopher & T&A in 5:56.

Rating: ** 1/2

Backstage, Michael Cole got some words from Booker T...

Booker T:  "Chris Jericho, sucka, tonight the World Heavyweight Title might not be on the line but it's gonna be on like a neckbone.  So when wreck yo' neck save the drama for yo mama cause it's gonna smack, jack in the middle of the ring one, two, three, brah and there ain't a damn thing you can do about it, dig it?"

Main Event: WPW World Heavyweight Champion, Chris Jericho v. Booker T - Non-Title Match.  It was then time for our Main Event of the evening as "One More Road" by DMX blared over the loudspeakers as Booker T made his way out to the ring first.  Then, "Break Down The Walls" brought the WPW World Heavyweight Champion, "Y2J" Chris Jericho along with the WPW Owner, Mick Foley out to the ring.  Jericho and Booker T circled eachother then locked up with Booker T backing Jericho into the corner.  Jericho thumbed Booker in the eye and unloaded on him with slaps and chops.  Booker kneed Jericho then hit forearms and shots to the back of Jericho.  Booker sent Jericho into the ropes but Jericho came off with a dropkick to the knee of Booker T then hit a double underhook backbreaker for a two count.  Jericho went for the Walls Of Jericho early but Booker T powered out.  Jericho then went for a suplex but Booker T dropped down the back and rolled up Jericho for a near fall.  Both men got up and Booker T nailed Jericho with a Harlem Sidekick then a shoulder lift flapjack for a near fall.  The match went back and forth at a high pace with lots of high impact moves from both men.  The closing moments of the match would see Booker T go for a Harlem Sidekick but Jericho ducked and hit a faceplant on Booker T.  Jericho then headed up to the top rope and waited for Booker T to get up.  Jericho would come off with a flying dropkick but Booker dodged it.  Booker then headed up top and nailed a Missile Dropkick then went back up top and nailed the HARLEM HANGOVER on JERICHO...

      ONE...

                  TWO...

...THR...FOLEY PULLS THE REFEREE OUT!  The ref and Foley argued on the outside while Booker T also yelled at Foley.  Triple H ran out with a chair as Jericho grabbed Booker T from behind and held him.  Triple H swung but Booker ducked out of the way and Triple H nailed Jericho!!  Booker T hit a Harlem Sidekick knocking Helmsley out of the ring.  Booker T would then drill Jericho with the Neckwrecker for the pin...

      ONE...

                  TWO...

...THREE!  THREE!  THREE!  Booker T just pinned the World Heavyweight Champion!  Booker T just got the biggest win of his career!

Non-Title-Match

WINNER: Booker T in 8:33.

Rating: *** 3/4

Booker T celebrated a bit then walked out of the ring up the ramp with his hand raised then headed towards the back as Jericho got to his feet shaking out the cobwebs.  Triple H rolled back into the ring and Jericho stumbled forward then got right face to face with Triple H.  We headed to a commercial as Mick Foley got inbetween them with Jericho staring a hole right through Triple H...

We returned with Triple H in one corner and Jericho in the other with Foley in the middle.  Jericho demanded a microhone and got one...

Chris Jericho:  "Triple H, for the second straight week you made me look bad and you do not make the World Heavyweight Champion look bad.  You don't make Y2J look bad.  Last week when it happened I thought it was just because of your utter stupidity but now, now I think you've got an ulterior motive.  Roll the footage of the chairshots [Footage is played of the two miscues causing Jericho to lose to Sting and Booker T]  Triple H, it looks to me like you had pleanty of time to pull back but you didn't because your jealous.  It kills you to stand there and look at me with this World Heavyweight Title belt.  It kills you that you couldn't beat Goldberg yet Y2J put him down not once but twice.  I think you're trying to sabotage my World Heavyweight Title reign now what do you have to say about that?!"

Triple H demanded a microphone and got one...

Triple H:  "What do I have to say?  What do *I* have to say?  I have to say that I've had it with you, Jericho.  I've had it with your bulls*** and while those two chairshots were accidents I don't really care anymore.  Chris Jericho, you're right, it kills me to see you holding *MY* World Heavyweight Title because you didn't earn it and you're a joke of a World Champion.  You come out here each week and run your mouth then back down from challenges.  Sure, you might have beaten Goldberg in theory but I doubt that if you weren't the bosses "boy" you wouldn't have won ****.  So Chris Jericho, I want a piece of your ass, I want my World Heavyweight Title back and I want it now!"

Mick Foley then grabbed a microphone...

Mick Foley:  "Hold on just a damn second here.  The two of you along with Kidman are the cornerstones of this promotion and I don't give a damn if these people want to see you rip eachother apart, I simply will not let it happen.  I'm the owner, I write the checks and that means my decision is FINAL so the two of you better learn to work together because that's the way it's going to be."

Cue "Money, Money, Money..." as the WPW Commissioner, Ted Dibiase walked out of the entrance with a microphone...

Ted Dibiase:  "Mick Foley, remember me?  The Commissioner, the man that you gave complete power over day-to-day operations of but you don't have to worry about me because I'm resiging as Commissioner of WPW..."

Mick Foley:  "Good, Ted, you traitor, get outta here..."

Ted Dibiase:  "Wait just a second here, Foley.  While I was looking through my contract it states that if prior to the completion of my term if I chose to volunteerly resign from my position I hold the power to name my succesor and that's exactly what I've done.  Ladies and gentlemen, you're new commissioner needs no introduction..."

Dibiase placed the microphone down on the stage then walked to the bakc as Foley, Triple H and Jericho all looked puzzled at eachother when we heard the sounds of...

"SPARCH ZARATHUSTRA..."

Foley's eyes opened up huge as out of the entrance walked the returning RIC FLAIR to a monster pop from the crowd.  It's been over two months since we last saw 'The Nature Boy' on WPW Television.  Flair would pick up the microphone...

Ric Flair:  "Just incase you guys in the ring haven't put it together yet or maybe you're still in shock, you're looking at your new WPW Commissioner, RIC FLAIR, custom made from head to toe and ready to run this joint.  WHOOOOOOOO!  I know we're running out of time here tonight so I'm not going to go off on a tyrant this week but the jest of what I've got to say is ... Triple H wants to rip apart Chris Jericho,  Chris Jericho wants a piece of Triple H, Chris Jericho is the World Heavyweight Champion, Triple H is a former champion ... The fans want it, those two want it but Mick Foley, you refuse to give it to them but brother, I've got the power to make the match and I have ... WPW Battle Ground live on pay-per-view ... OCTOBER 14th!  Chris Jericho will defend the WPW World Heavyweight Championship against Triple H and you, Mick Foley can't do a damn thing about it except REFEREE the match! WHOOOOOO!"

Triple H tried to get at Chris Jericho while Foley blocked him off as Ric Flair stood on top of the stage with a big grin on his face.  What a night!
