WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 - September 10 / 2000

-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-

The show opened with a video montage showing Mick Foley arriving at King Of Kings to help Chris Jericho defeat Goldberg then last week on WPW Sunday Night, Foley revealed himself as the Owner of the WPW and went on a tirade about how he felt the fans didn't care about him and how it was in the best interest of the company to have Jericho as World Champion.  Triple H came out and questioned Foley's actions but was talked into working with Foley and Jericho for money.  DX came out and argued with Triple H then agreed to split but Kidman turned on Road Dogg and X-Pac.  Jericho welcomed Kidman into 'The Elite'.  Road Dogg and X-Pac would lay out the challenge to Triple H and Kidman for later in the night but it didn't go their way as Triple H and Kidman came out victorious.  Tonight, Chris Benoit has laid out a challenge to Chris Jericho...

"Spit It Out" by Slipknot played in the background as the WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 graphic comes up on the screen then fades away but not completely as a fast paced montage of WPW action including; Jeff Jarrett KO'ing Rikishi with a guitar, The Acolytes Double Team Power Bombing X-Pac, Sting hitting a Scorpion Death Drop on Ric Flair, Kurt Angle hitting the Angleplex on DDP, Chris Jericho with Eddy Guerrero in the Walls Of Jericho, a Swanton Bomb by Jeff Hardy on Shane Helms, Ric Flair with Sting in the Figure Four Leglock, Triple H hitting the Pedigree on Ken Shamrock, Billy Kidman plastering Ric Flair in the head with a chair, Goldberg spearing Triple H and much, much more.  The WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 logo fades back into full then explodes...

"Welcome To The Fold" by Filter blared over the loudspeakers as the WPW Owner, Mick Foley walked out the entrance with 'The Elite' : 'The Man' Kidman, 'The Game' Triple H and the WPW World Heavyweight Champion, "Y2J" Chris Jericho.  Once in the ring, Triple H would take the microphone...

Triple H : "Last week, Road Dogg and X-Pac, the two sole remaining members of D-Generation X were put in their place and if either one of you show your faces in WPW again, there will be trouble..."

Kidman : "Sting, you want to make excuses for losing to The Game at King Of Kings?  You want to blame it all on me?  Well go right ahead because we all know that I had nothing to do with your loss.  You want me in the ring at Battle Ground?  I don't think so.  Sting, you have no business being in the ring with the man that retired Ric Flair.  You are simply not in my league."

Chris Jericho : "Chris Benoit, the two of us have been around the world together and I thought you were a smart man, that was until last week when you laid out a challenge to Y2J.  Sure, you may have beaten these two guys [Kidman and Triple H] but to lay out a challenge to the World Heavyweight Champion infront of all my Jericholics?  Just who in the hell do you think you are, Benoit?"

Mick Foley : "Jericho ... Jericho, tonight, you will go one on one with Chris Benoit in the middle of this very ring.  [Jericho looks pissed off]  HOWEVER, the WPW World Heavyweight Title will *NOT* be on the line..."

Chris Jericho : "Chris Benoit, just like Greenberg, you are going to find yourself staring up at the lights and the next thing you will hear is Y2J being announced the winner, jerky.  Chris Benoit, tonight you will learn never eh...eh...ever to step up to 'The Elite' A-GAIN!"

We would then go to Scott Hudson and Jerry Lawler at the announcers table.  Hudson and Lawler ran down the show for tonight which will include Kurt Angle defending the I-C Title against Ken Shamrock, Eddy Guerrero against Booker T, Too Cool goes for revenge against the Jung Dragons, the debut of The F.B.I., Masato Tanaka versus Al Snow and much, much more...

Opening Match: T&A v. The Unholy Alliance.  "Shock" by Fear Factory blared over the PA as Trish Stratus led T&A out to the ring for this tag team matchup.  Then, "Bombtrack" by Rage Against The Machine sounded as Sinister Minister led The Unholy Alliance of 'The Japanese Buzzsaw' Tajiri and Mikey Whipwreck out to the ring.  Test and Albert would attempt to overpower Whipwreck and Tajiri in this match using lots of double team power moves.  Whipwreck and Tajiri, on the other hand, would try and chop T&A down to size and mat wrestle them.  Whipwreck and Tajiri put together a lot of quick tags and double teaming.  The closing moments of the match would see Test go for a power bomb on Whipwreck but Whipwreck countered it with a Frankenmikey.  Whipwreck tagged in Tajiri who kicked Test in the back of the head then went for the Brain Buster but Albert made a blind tag in and would hit a full nelson slam on Tajiri.  Albert followed that up with the Gorilla Press Driver.  Albert tagged in Test, who went upstairs and delievered the Flying Elbowdrop on Tajiri.  Whipwreck came in but Albert caught him with a Two Handed Chokeslam allowing Test to get the one-two-three on Tajiri.  T&A score a close but hard fought win over The Unholy Alliance.

WINNERS: T&A in 3:42.

Rating: ** 3/4

Backstage a camera was looking into a dressing room and it was pitch black then out of the darkness walked a somber Al Snow muttering something to himself...

Match #2: Al Snow v. Masato Tanaka.  "What Is Fight Club?" by Dust Brothers brought out the mentally unstable, Al Snow to the ring for our next matchup.  Then, 'D A N G U N' sounded as the ultra-tough Masato Tanaka made his way out to the ring.  Snow and Tanaka have had a past history in WPW so they're no strangers to eachother.  This would be a decent match as Snow strayed from his submission attack and concentrated mostly on suplexes and technical wrestling.  Tanaka showed great wrestling skill mixed in with his brawling.  The closing moments of the match would see Tanaka go for a Tornado DDT but Snow threw him off.  Snow then nailed Tanaka with a superkick.  Snow tried the Snow Plow but Tanaka dropped out and sent Snow into the ropes then nailed the ROARING ELBOW!  Tanaka made the cover on Snow for the three count!  Masato Tanaka gains a win over Al Snow.

WINNER: Masato Tanaka in 3:12.

Rating: ** 3/4

After the match, Al Snow rolled to the outside and took the ring bell then came back in and nailed Tanaka from behind with it.  Snow then put Tanaka in a Dragon Sleeper until Steve Blackman bolted into the ring swinging his fighting sticks.  Snow quickly released the hold and rolled to the outside while Blackman checked on Tanaka.  NO!  Blackman nails Tanaka in the back of the head with his fighting stick! WHAT?! Blackman walks out of the ring and is walking behind Al Snow to the back?  Why would Blackman side with the man that almost ended his career?

Backstage, Chris Benoit had some comments...

Chris Benoit : "Chris Jericho, Y2J, I should've known that you wouldn't have enough guts to accept the challenge of The Crippler.  However, even though the World Heavyweight Title will not be on the line, that doesn't change the fact that I am going to beat you from pillar to post, bell to bell and give you the beating of your career."

Match #3: The F.B.I. v. Latino World Order.  "Stayin' Alive [Remix]" by N-Trance brought out the newest tag team in WPW, Guido Maritato and Tony Mamaluke, The Full Blooded Italians.  Then, 'La Raza' sounded as Juventud Guerrera and Papi Chulo of the Latino World Order made their way out to the ring.  This would be an awesome back and forth matchup as both teams took crazy high risks especially Papi Chulo and Tony Mamaluke.  Guido Maritato showed a lot of good mat wrestling and submission style in this one.  The closing moments of the match would see Mamaluke and Guido hit a double DDT on Juvy.  Mamlauke then brought Juvy into the corner for the Tornado DDT but Juvy held onto the ropes and Mamaluke went down.  When Mamaluke got to his feet he charged at Juvy but Juventud picked up Mamaluke and drilled him with the Juvy Driver for the one-two-three.  The LWO picks up the win but it was a great debut for The F.B.I. in WPW.

WINNERS: Latino World Order in 6:27.

Rating: *** 3/4

Backstage, Sting had some comments...

Sting : "Kidman ... You can run but you can't hide forever.  Sooner or later you will have to face me and the longer you run, the more anger I build up and the more hate I build up towards you.  Tonight, I make an example out of another egotistic youngster in Kid Kash.  It's Showtime!"

Match #4: Sting v. Kid Kash.  "Seek And Destroy" blared over the PA as Sting made his entrance.  Sting had an intense look on his face as he made his way into the ring.  Then, "Money, Power, Respect" brought Kid Kash out to the ring.  Sting wasted no time in going after Kash hitting him with rights and kicks then backhanded chops.  Sting picked up Kash and hit a gorilla press slam.  Kash begged off in the corner and Sting whipped him across the ring and hit a Stinger Splash.  Sting whipped Kash to the other side and nailed a second Stinger Splash.  Sting played to the crowd then brought Kash into the middle of the ring and spiked him with the Scorpion Death Drop.  Sting made the cover for the one-two-three.  Sting has demolished Kid Kash.

WINNER: Sting in 1:12.

Rating: **

Match #5: Jung Dragons v. Too Cool.  "Somebody Someone" by KoRn blared over the loudspeakers as the Jung Dragons' Jamie-San and Yung Yang along with Kaz Hayashi made their way out to the ring.  Last week, Kaz Hayashi debuted and with an assist from Jamie-San and Yang defeated Grandmaster Sexay.  Then, "Rump Shaker" by WnE brought Too Cool out to the ring.  Too Cool controlled the first few moments of the match until Kaz distracted Scottie and allowed the Jung Dragons to take over.  The match went back and forth from there until Jamie-San went for a flying lariat on Scottie but Scottie moved.  Yang came in but Scottie caught him with a faceslam then hit the WORM on Yang.  Jamie went up top and nailed Scottie with the Flying Dropkick for the one...two...three!  The Jung Dragons are victorious over Too Cool!

WINNERS: Jung Dragons in 3:54.

Rating: **

"Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit blasted through the loudspeakers as the 2-time WPW World Tag Team Champions, The Hardy Boyz headed into the ring in street clothes where Matt took a microphone...

Matt Hardy:  "After we ended our feud with The Acolytes by regaining the World Tag Team Titles in the Double Tables match at King Of Kings, The Hardy Boyz are looking for challengers.  Over the past two weeks we've seen some new tag teams hit the scene in WPW such as the Unholy Alliance, the Jung Dragons and The Full Blooded Italians.  We're just out here tonight to welcome all these teams to WPW because we need a challenge, we strive on challenges, we survive on the challenge."

Jeff Hardy:  "Along with food, water, shelter..."

Matt Hardy:  "What?  Whatever, Jeff.  So in closing..."

"Shock" by Fear Factory blared over the loudspeakers as T&A charged into the ring and started brawling with The Hardy Boyz while Trish Stratus stood approvingly at the entrance.  Then, Mikey Whipwreck and Tajiri rushed into the ring and started mixing things up as we had a Three Way brawl.  We cut back to the stage where the Sinister Minister was standing behind Trish then blew on her neck.  Trish turned around then screamed as the Sinister Minister just cackled at her.  WPW officials rushed into the ring to break up the brawl...

Match #6: Eddy Guerrero v. Booker T.  This match comes after Booker T returned a favor to The Acolytes and helped them from an attack by the Latino World Order.  "La Raza" hit as the leader of the LWO, Eddy Guerrero made his way out to the ring.  Then, "One More Road" by DMX blasted through the loudspeakers and out came Booker T.  These two also have an even prior history as Guerrero was the 1st ever IC Champion and Booker T was the man that beat him for the belt back at WPW Aggression.  Much like their previous encounters this would be a solid match between the two great wrestlers.  The closing moments of the match would see Booker T nail a Missile Dropkick on Guerrero which brought out Juvy and Chulo but they were cut off by The Acolytes.  The Acolytes laid out Juvy and Chulo on the outside which distracted Guerrero allowing Booker T to hit the Neckwrecker!  Booker T made the cover for the one .. two ... THREE!  Booker T takes the win over Eddy Guerrero!

WINNER: Booker T in 5:10.

Rating: ** 1/2

After the match, Eddy Guerrero grabbed a microphone...

Eddy Guerrero:  "That's it!  I've had enough of this!  Booker T ... Acolytes ... You are exactly the type of people that forced me into creating the Latino World Order.  Just because you're bigger then us doesn't mean that we can't beat you and we're going to prove it at Battle Ground.  I want a Six-Man Tag Team Match.  Booker T and The Acolytes against the Latino World Order, esay.  What I want ... I better get or there will be hell to pay!"

Booker T would then walk back out of the entrance with a mic...

Booker T:  "Eddy Guerrero, save the drama for your mama.  The reason you can't beat me is because your not good enough.  Sure, we accept your challenge and from listening to you, you've got a lot of hate for this game but sucka, this player is gonna make you hate it even more.  Now can you dig it?"

Match #7: Kurt Angle (c) v. Ken Shamrock - WPW Intercontinental Title.  After hearing Ken Shamrock's interview last week and based on his performance in the King Of Kings tournament, Shamrock has been rewarded with an I-C Title shot as well.  "Stress" by Godsmack brought out 'The Worlds Most Dangerous Man' Ken Shamrock to the ring.  Then, "My Hero" by Foo Fighters sounded as the WPW Intercontinental Champion, 'The American Hero' Kurt Angle came out to the ring.  Angle and Shamrock went at it in a very mat based match with lots of counter wrestling and chain wrestling.  There were many submission attempts from both men as this match was very old-style but good.  The closing moments of the match would see Angle hit a belly-to-belly suplex on Shamrock.  Angle then went for the Angleplex but Shamrock dropped down and sent Angle into the ropes.  Shamrock hit Angle with a leg lariat causing both men to be down.  Shamrock got up first and went for a huracanrana but Angle countered it with a power bomb.  Angle headed up top and tried a moonsault but Shamrock rolled out of the way.  Shamrock then locked Angle in the Anklelock!  Then out of nowhere, MIKE AWESOME slid into the ring and kicked Shamrock in the head.  Awesome kicked Shamrock a few more times then set him up and drilled him with a Running Awesome Bomb.  Awesome then went up top and connected with an Awesome Splash on Shamrock!  Mike Awesome has laid out Ken Shamrock, but why?

WINNER: Ken Shamrock via DQ in 5:58.

Rating: *** 1/4

(Kurt Angle retained the WPW Intercontinental Title.)

Backstage, Michael Cole tried to get some comments from Mike Awesome about why he attacked Ken Shamrock...

Mike Awesome:  "One word ... PAYBACK!"

Main Event: WPW World Heavyweight Champion, Chris Jericho v. Chris Benoit - Non-Title.  "Break Down The Walls" blasted through the loudspeakers as the WPW World Heavyweight Champion, "Y2J" Chris Jericho walked out to the ring alongside the WPW Owner, Mick Foley.  Then, "Surfacing" by Slipknot blared over the PA as the 2000 King Of Kings, 'The Crippler' Chris Benoit made his way out to the ring.  Benoit stood right in the face of Chris Jericho showing no emotion.  Jericho punched Benoit but Benoit fired back.  The two traded punches until Benoit took Jericho down with a backslide for two.  The two traded pinfall reversals until Benoit picked up Jericho and started to hit some chops.  Jericho came back with hard chops of his own as the two men had it out until Benoit kicked Jericho in the stomach then hit him with a headbutt.  Benoit followed that up with a german suplex for two.  Jericho bailed to the outside but Benoit dove through the ropes with a tope but Jericho moved.  Jericho stomped away on Benoit then rolled him inside.  Jericho went up top and hit a missile dropkick for two.  This great match between Benoit and Jericho went back and forth for several more minutes without anyone having the clearcut advantage.  The closing moments of the match would see Jericho go for a power bomb on Benoit but Benoit countered it with a backdrop then a clothesline sending Jericho to the floor.  Benoit went to the outside and traded punches with Jericho then hit a snap suplex on the floor.  Benoit would lock Jericho in the Crippler Crossface on the outside and Jericho was tapping out but it was on the outside.  Benoit got up and rolled Jericho in then headed up top.  Mick Foley walked around the ring and distracted the referee while Triple H ran out with a chair and KO'ed Benoit.  Jericho locked Benoit in the Walls Of Jericho and the blind referee would lift Benoit's hand three times then declare Chris Jericho the winner!  Chris Jericho gets the win over Chris Benoit in large thanks to Triple H.

WINNER: Chris Jericho in 10:51.

Rating: **** 1/4

Afterwards, Chris Jericho raised the World Title in the air as Triple H looked on.  Triple H appeared to be happy but Scott Hudson left us with the thought that how long can Triple H go without hunting for Jericho's gold or is money really more important to 'The Game'?
