WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 - August 27 / 2000

-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-

"Spit It Out" by Slipknot played in the background as the WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 graphic comes up on the screen then fades away but not completely as a fast paced montage of WPW action including; Jeff Jarrett KO'ing Rikishi with a guitar, The Acolytes Double Team Power Bombing X-Pac, Sting hitting a Scorpion Death Drop on Ric Flair, Kurt Angle hitting the Angleplex on DDP, Chris Jericho with Eddy Guerrero in the Walls Of Jericho, a Swanton Bomb by Jeff Hardy on Shane Helms, Ric Flair with Sting in the Figure Four Leglock, Triple H hitting the Pedigree on Ken Shamrock, Billy Kidman plastering Ric Flair in the head with a chair, Goldberg spearing Triple H and much, much more.  The WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 logo fades back into full then explodes...

"My Hero" by Foo Fighters kicked things off again this week as the WPW Intercontinental Champion, 'The American Hero' Kurt Angle made his way out to the ring and took a microphone...

Kurt Angle:  "Last week was the biggest miscarriage of justice that has ever been perpitrated on an American Hero in modern history when Chris Jericho left me high and dry to take on two men.  Chris Jericho, I've had my eye on your World Heavyweight Title for some time and tonight I want more gold, I want your gold.  As for Booker T, you've got your I-C Title shot at King Of Kings and if you EVER talk about my mother again, so help me, I won't be responsible for my actions!!!  Chris Jericho, I'm going to become a dual champion tonight, that is if you have the integrity to give me a title shot tonight..."

The lights went out and pyro shot as 'Break Down The Walls' came over the loudspeakers and out of the entrance came the WPW World Heavyweight Champion, 'Y2J' Chris Jericho...

Chris Jericho:  "Kirk Angel, you have the audacity to come out here and call the Heavyweight Champion of the World, a coward?  Last week, I did you a favor and saved your Olympic ass from Goldberg.  My work was done, it was your fight and you dropped the ball, jackass.  To prove to you that Y2J is not a coward, Kirk Angel, it's your lucky day because tonight, you get a shot at Y2J and the World Heavyweight Title but you won't be too lucky because this World Heavyweight Title is staying around the waist of Y2J until I decide to retire from the sport of wrestling."

"Money, Money, Money..." sounded as both men looked puzzled and out of the entrance came the WPW Commissioner, Ted Dibiase with a mic...

Ted Dibiase:  "Isn't this lovely?  A mutual agreement on a World Heavyweight Title match tonight.  The World Champion versus the I-C Champion.  Well, this is all fine and well but I was sitting back there with two men that had an idea and I agreed with it so we're going to make this match a TOWEL MATCH and in your corner Kurt Angle will be BOOKER T!!!  And Chris Jericho ... Your cornerman will be GOLDBERG!  I wish you two the best of luck.."

Ted Dibiase:  "Oh and one more thing, Chris Jericho, should you retain your title tonight.  This Saturday at King Of Kings in your match against Goldberg all contracted WPW wrestlers will be banned from interfering in the match or else they will be FIRED."

We then went to the announcers table where Scott Hudson was with new color commentator, Jerry "The King" Lawler.  Hudson and Lawler ran down the show as Road Dogg and X-Pac will face The Mamalukes, Mike Awesome goes up against Hardcore Holly, Dean Malenko defends the WPW Television Title against Kid Kash, Jeff Jarrett teams with Too Cool to face the LWO, Masato Tanaka battles Al Snow, Chris Benoit and Ken Shamrock team up against Triple H and Kidman, then in the Main Event for the WPW World Heavyweight Title in a Towel Match it will be Chris Jericho with Goldberg in his corner defending against Kurt Angle with Booker T in his corner.  We're just six days away from King Of Kings live on Pay-Per-View...

Opening Match: Road Dogg & X-Pac v. The Mamalukes.  "The Kings" by Run DMC brought D-Generation X's Road Dogg and X-Pac out to the ring for our first match of the evening.  Their opponents, The Mamalukes were already in the ring.  This match was a joke it was so one sided as Road Dogg and X-Pac just squashed The Mamalukes.  DX is serious about reclaiming their spots on top the promotion and it showed as they were all business.  The closing of the match would see X-Pac catch Big Vito in the X-Factor for the win.

WINNERS: Road Dogg and X-Pac in 1:43.

Rating: *

Backstage, Michael Cole got some comments from Goldberg...

Goldberg:  "Chris Jericho, tonight I'm going to sit back and enjoy you and Kurt Angle beat the living hell out of eachother because I'm not going to throw the towel in.  Come Saturday, the World Title, and your ass is mine because Y2J, I've said it before and I'll say it again, YOU'RE NEXT!"

Match #2: Mike Awesome v. Hardcore Holly.  "Awesome" by Reckless Fortune blasted through the loudspeakers as Mike Awesome stalked his way out to the ring.  Then, Hardcore Holly made his way out and took the fight right to Awesome.  Holly held nothing back against Awesome and showed his toughness before Awesome hit a knee then a power bomb.  Awesome dominated from there as he set up a table and would send Holly through the table with an Awesome Bomb off the ring apron.  Awesome rolled Holly into the ring and hit an Awesome Splash for the one .. two .. THREE!  Mike Awesome remains strong heading into the King Of Kings Tournament.

WINNER: Mike Awesome in 2:41.

Rating: * 1/2

Backstage, Michael Cole got some comments from Booker T...

Booker T:  "What a marvelous night this has turned out to be, Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, the two of you are getting what you deserve and I heard Goldberg say that he won't throw in the towel, well neither will I so I guess it's gonna be a fight to the death and I've got a front row seat, sucka.  Kurt Angle, enjoy your reign as Intercontinental Champion is coming to an end, now can you dig it?"

Match #3: Dean Malenko (c) v. Kid Kash - WPW Television Title.  "Money, Cash, Hoes" brought the self-proclaimed 'Money In The Bank' Kid Kash out to the ring.  Once in the ring, Kash would take a microphone...

Kid Kash:  "After last weeks minor setback, the greatest talent to ever grace the sports entertainment, the future of sports entertainment, the diamond in the rough, money the bank, put stock in me I'm so hot, Kid Kash is going to be your next Television Champion because Kid Kash is MONEY."

"Change" by Deftones then sounded as the reigning WPW Television Champion, 'The Shooter' Dean Malenko made his way out to the ring for this title match.  Malenko and Kash locked up with Malenko going for a forearm smash but Kash ducked, kicked Malenko and hit a DDT.  Kash went out to the apron and hit a slingshot splash.  Kash then went for a dropkick but Malenko moved.  Malenko then dropped a knee on Kash's forehead.  Malenko would ground Kash and work over him on the mat for a bit while Kash would go to the air and be very impressive with his arial assault.  This would be a very good match as Kash more then held his own against a veteran in Dean Malenko.  The closing moments of the match would see Malenko go for a gutbuster but Kash dropped down on his feet then hit a fisherman buster on Malenko.  Kash took Malenko to the to rope and went for a top-rope frankensteiner but NO!  Malenko turns it into a tiger driver in mid-air!  Malenko folds up Kash for the cover ... ONE! TWO! THREE!  Malenko has pulled the win out of nowhere in a great match with Kid Kash.

WINNER: Dean Malenko in 9:36.

Rating: *** 3/4

(Dean Malenko retained the WPW Television Title.)

Afterwards, Dean Malenko was impressed with Kid Kash and offered him a handshake but Kid Kash turned his back on Malenko and walked away from the ring cursing...

Match #4: Jeff Jarrett & Too Cool v. Latino World Order.  "Cowboy" by Kid Rock brought the team of 'Double J' Jeff Jarrett and Too Cool out to the ring.  Too Cool were serious and not dancing tonight which pleased Jarrett.  Then, 'La Raza' hit as the Latino World Order of Eddy Guerrero, Juventud Guerrera and Papi Chulo made their way out into the ring.  This would be an action packed six man match while the LWO working more as a unit then Jarrett and Too Cool.  The closing moments of the match would see Jarrett hit the Stroke on Papi Chulo but Grandmaster Sexay wanted to come in and hit the Hip Hop Drop but Jarrett disagreed with him.  Papi tagged in Juventud Guerrera.  Juvy would use a reverse leg cradle on Jarrett from behind for the quick one, two, three!  LWO steals the win as Jarrett and Too Cool can't get along.

WINNERS: Latino World Order in 5:01.

Rating: **

Afterwards, Jarrett went and grabbed his guitar and was going to hit Grandmaster but Scottie stopped him.  Jarrett cooled off and extended a hand to Sexay.  They shook hands then Jarrett cranked Sexay over the head with the guitar.  Jarrett yelled at him then left the ring pointing at Scottie Too Hottie saying, "DON'T PISS ME OFF!"

"Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit blasted over the loudspeakers as The Hardy Boyz made their way out to the ring and took a microphone...

Matt Hardy:  "In just a few short days we're going to step into a Double Tables Match with The Acolytes.  Acolytes, we've met two times in the past, once we came out with the gold, and last month you came out with gold so what a better way to figure who's the better team then one of the most violent matches in wrestling, the Double Tables match."

Jeff Hardy:  "Faarooq, Bradshaw, you may bigger then us but for our entire careers we've fought against the odds and won.  King OF Kings, will be no different and our World Tag Team Titles are coming back where they belong."

"Iron Man" by Black Sabbath hit and The Acolytes charged the ring and the four men brawled for a little while until The Acolytes got the better of The Hardy Boyz.  Faarooq and Bradshaw brought two tables into the ring and set them up.  The two then set up Matt Hardy for a double team power bomb but Jeff Hardy broke it up.  The two knocked Bradshaw out of the ring with a double clothesline then Matt hit the Twist Of Fate on Faarooq and placed him on the table while Jeff went up top and drove Faarooq through the table with the Swanton Bomb.  Bradshaw re-entered the ring and knocked out Matt with a Clothesline From Hell.  Bradshaw then knocked Jeff Hardy out of the ring with a big boot.  Bradshaw set up Matt Hardy and put him through the other table with a power bomb.  Jeff Hardy rolled back into the ring and went toe-to-toe with Bradshaw but WPW officials flooded the ring to break things up.

Match #5: Masato Tanaka v. Al Snow.  'D A N G U N' blared over the loudspeakers as Masato Tanaka made his way out to the ring for our next matchup.  Then, "What Is Fight Club?" by Dust Brothers brought his opponenet, Al Snow out to the ring.  The two would lock up with Tanaka going for a slam but Snow countered with a small package.  Snow then used a fireman's carry into a jujigatame but Tanaka quickly got to the ropes.  Snow kicked Tanaka as he was getting up then nailed him with some right hands then went for the Snow Plow but Tanaka countered it with an inside cradle for two.  Tanaka would then connect with a shoulderblock on Snow followed by a reverse neckbreaker for two.  This match continued on back and forth with Snow using his submission style while Tanaka hit Snow with everything he had.  The closing moments of the match would see Tanaka go for a swinging DDT but Snow threw him off.  Snow then hit a superkick on Tanaka and went for a jujigatame but Tanaka rolled up Snow for two.  Both men got up and Tanaka went for a forearm smash but Snow moved and sent Tanaka into the ropes and went for a clotheslien but Tanaka ducked, bounced off the ropes and naield Snow with the ROARING ELBOW!  Tanaka made the cover on Snow for the one ... two ... THREE!  Masato Tanaka picks up the win over Al Snow.

WINNER: Masato Tanaka in 5:23.

Rating: ** 1/2

After the match, Mike Awesome walked out of the entrance and caught Tanaka's attention long enough for Snow to get the ring bell and nail Tanaka in the arm.  Snow work over Tanaka's arm and locked him in a jujigatame until WPW officials tore him off but the damage had been done.

  We cut to a video package previewing the eight participants in the King Of Kings Tournament;

Chris Benoit vs. Kidman : Benoit went through Johnny The Bull and Papi Chulo to advance to the Quarterfinals while Kidman defeated Crash Holly and Jeff Hardy.  Both these men have the endurance to last in the tournament.  There is also a lingering rivalry here from the Horsemen-DX rivalry and the fact that Kidman retired Ric Flair.

Triple H vs. Sting : Triple H defeated Road Dogg and Rikishi on his way to the Quarterfinals while Sting went through Big Vito and Booker T to make it.  Surprisingly enough this will be the first ever meeting of these two men in a wrestling ring.  Triple H is a former WPW World Champion and these two men are the most high profile wrestlers in the tournament.

Masato Tanaka vs. Mike Awesome : Masato Tanaka defeated Steve Blackman and Test to advance to the Quarterfinals while Mike Awesome defeated Tommy Rogers and Steven Regal.  This is an interesting matchup as Masato Tanaka debuted in WPW last month at International Incident to accept a challenge from Mike Awesome.  These two men have fought for years all over the world.  Tanaka became the first man to pin Awesome in WPW last week in a tag team match.

Ken Shamrock vs. Eddy Guerrero : Ken Shamrock went through Hardcore Holly and X-Pac to make it to the Quarterfinals while Eddy Guerrero defeated Albert and Al Snow to get in.  These two are considered underdogs in the tournmant and this should be an interesting matchup of Shamrock's submission style against the lucha style of Eddy Guerrero.  Will the LWO be far behind?

From a field of 32 wrestlers, these eight men remain, which one will withstand three grueling matches in one night to be crowned the King Of Kings...

Match #6: Chris Benoit & Ken Shamrock v. Triple H & Kidman.  "Surfacing" by Slipknot blared over the loudspeakers as 'The Crippler' Chris Benoit and 'The Worlds Most Dangerous Man' Ken Shamrock made their way out to the ring for our next match.  Then, "ONE! TWO! ZIS ON?!" sounded and out came 'The Game' Triple H and Kidman.  As the match began, Sting made his way out to the announce position and joined the team.  There's a lot of history here as DX and the former Horsemen have battled on numerous occasions and now under a different set of circumstances meet again.  This would be a good tag team match until Triple H and Kidman got in trouble and out of the back came Road Dogg and X-Pac.  Sting got up from the announcers table and took care of Road Dogg and X-Pac then pointed down Triple H.  Benoit would then hit a german suplex, followed by a second, then a third which was a release suplex.  Benoit quickly went up top and came off with the Swandive Headbutt on Triple H.  Benoit made the cover for the one ... two ... THREE!  Chris Benoit has regained a pinfall over Triple H!  Sting walked away with a smirk on his face, he's got Triple H this Saturday.

WINNERS: Chris Benoit and Ken Shamrock in 5:51.

Rating: *** 1/2

Main Event: Chris Jericho (c) v. Kurt Angle - WPW World Heavyweight Title Towel Match.  It was then time for one of our most intriguing matches in WPW history as "My Hero" by Foo Fighters brought the challenger and WPW Intercontinental Champion, 'The American Hero' Kurt Angle out to the ring.  Then, 'Break Down The Walls' sounded as the WPW World Champion, 'Y2J' Chris Jericho made his way out to the ring.  "Party Up" by DMX was then heard as Booker T came out with a towel and stood in Kurt Angle's corner.  'INVASION...' hit and the place erupted for Goldberg.  Goldberg came out with a chair, set it up and took a seat in Jericho's corner.  The bell sounded and it was time for action.  Jericho would control the action to start then they went back and forth with punches until Angle would drop toe hold Jericho.  Angle then tried to suplex Jericho but Jericho suplex Angle out to the apron.  Jericho hit a springboard dropkick knocking Angle to the floor.  Jericho went to the outside and they brawled back and forth as Goldberg and Booker T looked on.  Jericho would slam Angle down on the floor then hit a lionsault off the steps.  Jericho rolled Angle and went up top but Angle crotched Jericho on top and hit a belly-to-belly superplex and looked at Goldberg but Goldberg didn't throw in the towel so Angle hit a suplex on Jericho.  Angle continued to work over Jericho until Jericho kicked Angle in the midsection and hit a double-arm backbreaker.  Jericho tried a german suplex but Angle countered it with a go behind and release german suplex of his own followed by a single arm DDT.  Angle worked over Jericho's arm then sent him into the corner and Angle charged in but Jericho got the legs up and hit a face buster.  Jericho followed that up with a flying forearm shot and told Booker T to throw in the towel but Booker T told him to keep fighting.  Angle would get up and try a rana but Jericho turned it into a power bomb, held on and hit a second power bomb.  Jericho continued to ask Booker T to throw in the towel.  Angle chopblocked the legs of Jericho then put him in a cross armbreaker but Jericho got to the ropes and Goldberg didn't even flinch.  The two then went back and forth with punches until Jericho got the better and went for a clothesline but Angle ducked and went for the Angleplex but Jericho dropped down and used a double leg takedown into the Walls Of Jericho!  Angle tapped out and gave up but Booker T refused to throw in the towel.  Jericho released Angle and demanded that Booker T throw in the towel.  Booker went under the ring and pulled out a trash can then a small can.  Booker poured something over his towel then took out a lighter and torched his towel and dropped it into the trash can.  Booker T has torched his towel!  Angle got to his feet and would catch Jericho with the Angleplex.  Angle demanded that Goldberg throw in the towel but Goldberg went around the ring and would TORCH HIS TOWEL as well!  (No Contest? 11:45 ***) Goldberg and Booker T looked at eachother then jumped into the ring and laid out both Angle and Jericho.  Mike Awesome would then hit the rnig with a kendo stick and started wearing out both men until Masato Tanaka hit the ring and started brawling with Awesome.  Out of nowhere, Triple H and Kidman ran into the ring and cleared the ring then Chris Benoit, Sting and Ken Shamrock ran out and started brawling with Kidman and Triple H.  Next thing we know Eddy Guerrero is in attacking Ken Shamrock.  ALL HELL HAS BROKEN LOOSE!  We'll see you Saturday for the King Of Kings!
