WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 - August 20 / 2000

-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-

The show opened up with highlights from last week as one half of the Quarterfinals for the King Of Kings Tournament was set as Chris Benoit will meet Kidman and Triple H will face Sting.  Goldberg and Masato Tanaka teamed up to battle the WPW World Champion, Chris Jericho and Mike Awesome in the Main Event.  Tanaka scored the pinfall after Goldberg speared Mike Awesome then Tanaka hit the Roaring Elbow.  Goldberg would take the World Title belt and raise it over his head to end the show sending a message to the current champion...

We cut to the arena entrance as the World Champion, Chris Jericho arrived with Mike Awesome and Al Snow in the background.  Jericho was looking surprsingly smug after last week...

"Spit It Out" by Slipknot played in the background as the WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 graphic comes up on the screen then fades away but not completely as a fast paced montage of WPW action including; Jeff Jarrett KO'ing Rikishi with a guitar, The Acolytes Double Team Power Bombing X-Pac, Sting hitting a Scorpion Death Drop on Ric Flair, Kurt Angle hitting the Angleplex on DDP, Chris Jericho with Eddy Guerrero in the Walls Of Jericho, a Swanton Bomb by Jeff Hardy on Shane Helms, Ric Flair with Sting in the Figure Four Leglock, Triple H hitting the Pedigree on Ken Shamrock, Billy Kidman plastering Ric Flair in the head with a chair, Goldberg spearing Triple H and much, much more.  The WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 logo fades back into full then explodes...

"My Hero" by Foo Fighters sounded over the PA and out of the entrance came the WPW Intercontinental Champion, 'The Olympic Gold Medalist' Kurt Angle.  Angle made his way into the ring with a microphone in hand...

Kurt Angle:  "Your Olympic Gold Medalist and true American Hero has arrived.  Thank you.  Thank you.  I'm out here tonight to make a fitting challenge.  Being the current Intercontinental Champion and an Olympic Gold Medalist should be enough for any man but not your Olympic Hero.  You see, last week I defeated the WPW Television Champion which should have made me a dual champion but Dean Malenko doesn't have the integrity to put his title belt on the line.  However, I have set my sights on a richer prize but this is not the type of gold that you can wear, no.  I want to show the world that BILL GOLDBERG is a fraud.  Goldberg, all of America seems to have fallen in love with you and I just can't see why.  Sure you have intensity but your actions show a complete lack of integrity and zero intelligence.  Maybe most of America can relate to being immoral and stupid but not I.  Goldberg, tonight, I want you one on one in the middle of this very ring."

'INVASION...'  hit and out of the entrance walked Goldberg.  Goldberg stopped at the top of the stage with a microphone...

Goldberg:  "Kurt Angle, American Jackass, Olympic goof.  It might be easy for you to come out here every week and be naive to the fact that these people hate your guts.  You like to come out here and run your mouth much like Chris Jericho and much like Chris Jericho, I'm going to shut your mouth for you.  Kurt Angle, you've just signed a deal with the devil because YOU'RE NEXT!"

Kurt Angle:  "After I beat you tonight, maybe we can go out, have a few Odouls and I'll give you some pamphlets for an anger management course, Goldberg or maybe I'll drop them off at your hospital bed.  It's true, it's true."

'INVASION' sounded again and Goldberg turned to leave when he was blindsided by Chris Jericho, Mike Awesome and Al Snow.  The three men pummeled away on Goldberg on the entrance ramp leaving Goldberg laying

We then went to the announcers table where Scott Hudson and Terry Taylor welcomed us to the show.  Tonight the Quarterfinals of the King Of Kings Tournament will be filled as Masato Tanaka faces Test, Mike Awesomes faces Steven Regal, Eddy Guerrero faces Al Snow and Ken Shamrock faces X-Pac.  In addition to that there will be a #1 Contenders Match for the World Tag Team Titles as T&A take on The Hardy Boyz.  Kid Kash will make his much self-hyped debut against 'Double J' Jeff Jarett.  Triple H teams up with Kidman to take on Chris Benoit and Sting in a preview of 1/2 of the KoK Quarterfinals.  Then in our Main Event, Goldberg will take on WPW I-C Champion, Kurt Angle.

We would then cut backstage where Michael Cole was with Trish Stratus and T&A...

Trish Stratus:  "Tonight is just another example of unfair treatment towards my men.  After last week when Test and Albert defeated the Wolrd Tag Team Champions, they are forced to compete in a Number One Contenders Match against The Hardy Boyz.  In addition to that, Test is wrestling Masato Tanaka up next in the King Of Kings Tournament.  This is completely unfair.  I bet those Acolytes are behind this, I just bet..."

Opening Match: Masato Tanaka v. Test - King Of Kings First Round.  'D A N G U N' was heard as Masato Tanaka made his way out to the ring to a good pop from the crowd.  Then, "Shock" by Fear Factory brought out his opponent led by Trish Stratus, Test.  The two locked up with Test hitting some knees to the midsection of Tanaka then using a pumphandle powerslam on Tanaka for a two coutn.  Test worked over Tanaka some more before Tanaka came back and would hit a swinging DDT for a near fall.  This was a hard hitting match as Tanaka showed that despite his size, he's one of the toughest men in wrestling.  The closing moments of the match would see Tanaka hit a Diamond Dust on Test then signal for the Roaring Elbow but Trish got up on the apron to distract Tanaka.  Test came from behind but Tanaka ducked and Test hit Trish.  Tanaka then nailed Test with the Roaring Elbow for the one...two...THREE!  Masato Tanaka advances to the Quarterfinals of the King Of Kings Tournament!

WINNER: Masato Tanaka in 3:45.

Rating: * 3/4

We cut backstage where EMTs were trying to attend to Goldberg but Goldberg refused medical attention throwing around boxes and other debris in rage after another attack by Chris Jericho and his entourage at the top of the show...

Match #2: Mike Awesome v. Steven Regal - King Of Kings First Round.  "Awesome" by Reckless Fortune blared over the loudspeakers as Mike Awesome stalked his way out to the ring for our next matchup.  Then the 'British Ballad' brought out 'Lord' Steven Regal.  Awesome and Regal locked up with Regal going into a hammerlock then pulling Awesome's legs from underhim then locking on a kneebar.  Regal released it then would hit Awesome with a series of European Uppercuts then tried a fisherman suplex but Awesome blocked it and sent Regal into the ropes and hit a big lariat.  Awesome lined up Regal and hit a diving shoulderblock.  This would be a battle of Awesome's unique powerhouse and high flying style against one of the most experienced grapplers in the business in Steven Regal.  Regal did his best to try and outwrestle Awesome but Awesome's power was just too much.  The ending would see Regal go for a Regal Roll but Awesome didn't go up then kicked Regal in the midsection and hit the Running Awesome Bomb.  Awesome then headed up top and nailed an Awesome Splash for the one-two-three!  Mike Awesome moves on to the Quarterfinals where he will meet Masato Tanaka!

WINNER: Mike Awesome in 4:07.

Rating: *** 1/4

Backstage, Michael Cole was with the WPW World Heavyweight Champion, "Y2J" Chris Jericho.  Cole questioned Jericho being afraid of Goldberg and that's why he's been attacking him...

Chris Jericho:  "Listen Mitchell, Y2J is afraid of no man, especially William Greenberg.  Greenberg, consider this your first and last warning to pull out of the match at King Of Kings because if you don't, you may just not make it to King Of Kings, jack."

Match #3: Al Snow v. Eddy Guerrero - King Of Kings First Round.  "What Is Fight Club?" by Dust Brothers brought out the mentally unstable, Al Snow.  Then, "La Raza" sounded as Eddy Guerrero of the Latino World Order made his way out to the ring.  Guerrero and Snow circled eachother then locked up with Guerrero going to the eyes then hitting a back suplex.  Guerrero sent Snow into the ropes and caught him in a spinning backbreaker.  Guerrero went out to the apron for a slingshot somersault but Snow moved.  Snow then hit some chops and kicks on Guerrero followed by an ocean cyclone suplex for two.  Snow then focused his attack on the legs of Guerrero wearing him down.  This match went back and forth for a few minutes until Guerrero went for a brain buster but Snow dropped down then back and locked Guerrero in a dragon sleeper.  This brought Juventud Guerrera out from the back.  Juvy distracted the ref then Papi Chulo came off the top with a flying dropkick to Snow.  Guerrero then hit a brain buster on Snow and went up top.  Guerrero followed that up with the Frog Splash for the one ... two .. THREE!  Guerrero moves onto the Quarterfinals with help from the LWO...

WINNER: Eddy Guerrero in 3:55.

Rating: * 3/4

We entered the locker room of D-Generation X where Triple H, Kidman, Road Dogg and X-Pac were all discussing the night...

Triple H:  "As it stands right now, the King Of Kings, in one way shape or form will be brought home to D-Generation X.  I've got Sting in the Quarterfinals and while some may think that's an unlucky draw, it is ... for Sting.  Kidman, you've got that runt, Chris Benoit, you should have no trouble, after all, you did RETIRE Ric Flair.  Tonight, Kidman, we've got our chance to send Sting and Benoit a message going into King Of Kings and that message will be delivered, DX style."

Kidman:  "We seem to have been put in the backburner as of late while Goldberg and Chris Jericho hog the spotlight.  I say, after the King Of Kings, we take our rightful spot on top of this promotion."

X-Pac:  "I couldn't have said it any better myself..."

Road Dogg:  "On three ... 1 ... 2 ... 3"

All Four:  "DX!"

Match #4: Ken Shamrock v. X-Pac - King Of Kings First Round.  "Stress" by Godsmack blasted over the loudspeakers as 'The Worlds Most Dangerous Man' Ken Shamrock made his way out to the ring.  Then, "The Kings" by Run DMC brought X-Pac out to the ring.  X-Pac and Shamrock went face to face.  X-Pac tried to slap Shamrock but Shamrock blocked it and whipped X-Pac into the ropes.  X-Pac came off with a spinning leg lariat but Shamrock moved.  Shamrock picked up X-Pac and hit a cradle suplex.  Shamrock then went for a DDT but X-Pac blocked it and hit kicks to Shamrock's legs then went for a side suplex but Shamrock countered with elbows then hit a belly-to-belly suplex on X-Pac.  Shamrock and X-Pac went back and forth in a good match.  The closing moments of the match would see X-Pac go for the X-Factor but Shamrock blocked it, jumped up and hit a huracanrana!  Shamrock followed that up by dragging X-Pac into the middle of the ring and slapping on the Ankle Lock for the submission win!  Ken Shamrock will face Eddy Guerrero in the Quarterfinals of the King Of Kings Tournament.

WINNER: Ken Shamrock in 5:50.

Rating: ****

We headed backstage where Michael Cole was with the WPW World Tag Team Champions, The Acolytes...

Faarooq:  "Last week, T&A got a lucky win with a large assist from that hussy Trish Stratus and a steel chair and that doesn't sit too well with us.  Understand this whether it's T&A or The Hardy Boyz we're upping the stakes for the match at King Of Kings."

Bradshaw:  "We feel like hurting someone, real bad so at King Of Kings, the match is going to be a DOUBLE TABLES MATCH.  T&A or Hardy Boyz, it doesn't matter because The Acolytes will dominate."

Match #5: T&A v. The Hardy Boyz - Number One Contenders.  "Shock" by Fear Factory blared over the PA as Trish Stratus led T&A out to the ring.  Test looked fatigued from his match with Masato Tanaka earlier in the evening.  Then, "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit blasted through the loudspeakers and out came The Hardy Boyz.  The Hardy Boyz would try to isolate Test in the ring because he was already worn down.  T&A were still impressive with their double team power moves.  The closing moments of the match would see Matt Hardy go for the Twist Of Fate on Test but Albert came in and hit him with a big boot.  Test then drilled Matt Hardy with a power bomb.  Test headed up top for the Diving Elbowdrop but Hardy rolled out of the way.  Matt then hit the Twist Of Fate on Test and tagged in Jeff Hardy.  Matt hit Albert with a dropkick knocking him to the floor.  Matt then lept onto Albert with a plancha while Jeff came off the top with the SWANTON BOMB on Test for the one .. two .. THREE!  The Hardy Boyz will go into King Of Kings to challenge for the World Tag Team Titles in a Double Tables Match against The Acolytes.

WINNERS: The Hardy Boyz in 4:32.

Rating: ** 1/4

Match #6: Jeff Jarrett v. Kid Kash.  "Cowboy" by Kid Rock blared over the PA as 'Double J' Jeff Jarrett made his way out to the ring for our next matchup.  Then, "Money, Cash, Hoes" blared over the PA and after a few seconds, Kid Kash stepped out of the entrance to some boos from the crowd.  Kash arrogantly swaggered to the ring and took off his shirt and hat.  The bell rang and Jarrett went to lock up but Kash stepped back and checked out his hair then stepped in and spat in Jarrett's face.  Jarrett then decked Kash with a right hand to kick things off.  Jarrett hit a few more punches then went for a single arm DDT but Kash countered it with a northern lights suplex.  Kash followed that up with a flying forearm on Jarrett then a series of japanese arm drag takedowns.  Kash then went up top for a moonsault but Jarrett moved.  This match continued on with Kid Kash being very impressive with his high flying offense while Jarrett tried to ground him.  The closing moments of the match would see Kash nail the Money Maker on Jarrett which should've been the end but instead Kash pulled Jarrett up and kicked Jarrett to the outside and went for a running somersault plancha but Jarrett moved!  Jarrett rolled Kash into the ring and hit the Stroke for the one ... two ... THREE!  Jeff Jarrett beats Kid Kash in his debut.  Kash could've had the match won but chose to showboat instead and it cost him...

WINNER: Jeff Jarrett in 5:53.

Rating: ** 3/4

After the match, Kash threw a tantrum kicking the ropes then ripped off the ring announcers jacket and pushed him around yelling that he's the future, he should've won, he's the best, etc...

Match #7: Triple H & Kidman v. Chris Benoit & Sting.  "ONE! TWO! ZIS ON?!" sounded as D-Generation X's 'The Game' Triple H and 'The Man' Kidman headed out to the ring.  Then, "Surfacing" by Slipknot blasted through the loudspeakers as 'The Crippler' Chris Benoit headed out to the ring.  Finally, "Seek And Destroy" brought Sting out to the ring.  Triple H will face Sting and Kidman will face Chris Benoit in the Quarterfinals of the King Of Kings Tournament so this match is a preview of sorts even though all four men are no strangers to eachother.  Benoit and Triple H started things off and there was no love lost from last month at International Incident where the two faced off.  Triple H got the controversial win after putting Benoit through a table with the Pedigree.  The match went back and forth until Triple H and Kidman double teamed Benoit for much of the match until Benoit finally made the tag to Sting.  Sting took control on both men then tagged Benoit back in while Sting brawled with Kidman on the outside.  Triple H would hit a low blow on Benoit then drill him with the Pedigree for the one-two-three!  Triple H scores the pinfall on Benoit in this tag team match!

WINNERS: Kidman and Triple H in 5:37.

Rating: ** 3/4

THREE!  Goldberg and Booker T have won this unscheduled tag team match!
