WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 - August 13 / 2000

-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-

We opened in the locker room of the Latino World Order with Juventud Guerrera and Papi Chulo sitting on the bench while Eddy Guerrero was standing up...

Eddy Guerrero:  "Tonight we continue to show the world that the Latino World Order is the greatest collection of talent in the world and we deserve respect and demand it.  Papi, you've got that buck toothed Canadian Chris Benoit in the King Of Kings Tournament.  Now Benoit may be a great wrestler but what you've got to do is out think him.  That won't be too hard since he *IS* Canadian.  Juvy, we've got Too Cool tonight in tag team action.  These two fools are exactly whats wrong with American wrestling, instead of showing off their wrestling talent they choose to dress, act and dance like idiots.  Remember when in doubt, cheat to win."

"Spit It Out" by Slipknot played in the background as the WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 graphic comes up on the screen then fades away but not completely as a fast paced montage of WPW action including; Jeff Jarrett KO'ing Rikishi with a guitar, The Acolytes Double Team Power Bombing X-Pac, Sting hitting a Scorpion Death Drop on Ric Flair, Kurt Angle hitting the Angleplex on DDP, Chris Jericho with Eddy Guerrero in the Walls Of Jericho, a Swanton Bomb by Jeff Hardy on Shane Helms, Ric Flair with Sting in the Figure Four Leglock, Triple H hitting the Pedigree on Ken Shamrock, Billy Kidman plastering Ric Flair in the head with a chair, Goldberg spearing Triple H and much, much more.  The WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 logo fades back into full then explodes...

We then headed to the announcers table where Scott Hudson and Terry Taylor were seated.  They ran down the lineup for tonight as in King Of Kings Tournament action; Chris Benoit faces Papi Chulo, Kidman faces Jeff Hardy, Triple H battles Rikishi and Sting goes against Booker T.  Also tonight, in tag team action Too Cool takes on Eddy Guerrero and Juventud Guerrera of the LWO and in Non-Title action it's The Acolytes against T&A.  All that plus our special tag team main event as Goldberg teams up with Masato Tanaka to take on "Y2J" Chris Jericho and Mike Awesome!!!  All that and more tonight on WPW Sunday Night...

Opening Match: Chris Benoit v. Papi Chulo - King Of Kings First Round.  "Surfacing" by Slipknot blasted over the loudspeakers as 'The Crippler' Chris Benoit made his way out to the ring first.  Then, "La Raza" brought out Papi Chulo of the Latino World Order.  The winner of this match will go on to the Quarterfinals at the PPV.  Benoit and Chulo locked up with Benoit throwing Chulo into the ropes then hitting a dropkick.  Benoit then scooped up Chulo but Chulo dropped down and hit an armdrag.  Chulo kicked Benoit in the back then played to the crowd a bit.  Chulo tried to send Benoit into the ropes but Benoit reversed it and nailed a lariat.  Benoit continued with his rough snug style to wear down Chulo while Chulo countered that with his lucha libre high flying style.  The ending would see Benoit go for a german suplex but Chulo flipped out then went on the apron and hit a springboard dropkick on Benoit.  Chulo then headed up top and waited on Benoit and tried a flying frankensteiner but Benoit caught Chulo and drilled him with a hard powerbomb.  Benoit then quickly locked Chulo in the Crippler Crossface.  Chulo had no choice but to tap out to the pain.  'The Crippler' advances into the Quarterfinals...

WINNER: Chris Benoit in 4:43.

Rating: *** 3/4

"Change" by Deftones played over the loudspeakers and out of the entrance stormed the WPW Television Champion, 'The Shooter' Dean Malenko.  Malenko got into the ring and took a microphone...

Dean Malenko:  "Kurt Angle, last week you stuck your Olympic ass in my business and robbed these fans of seeing a clear winner between myself and Booker T.  I've been watching you for awhile Angle and for all your amateur maneuvers, there's a counter and counterhold so bring your ass out here, no titles on the line, man to man, and I'll show you that they don't call me the Man Of 1,000 Holds for nothing..."

"My Hero" by Foo Fighters sounded as the WPW Intercontinental Champion, Kurt Angle emerged from the entrance with a microphone...

Kurt Angle:  "Dean, don't get yourself all worked up because yes, being the Olympic Gold Medalist that I am, I'm going to accept your challenge and you don't stand a chance against me and that is true."

Match #2: WPW Intercontinental Champion, Kurt Angle v. WPW Television Champion, Dean Malenko - Double Non-Title.  Angle headed to the ring with a cocky grin on his face but Malenko quickly wiped it off with a right hand.  Malenko then sent Angle into the ropes and went for a leg lariat but Angle held onto the ropes then hit Malenko with a clothesline.  Angle hit some right hands then a fireman's carry on Malenko for two.  Angle then went for a full nelson but Malenko countered it with a rolling cradle for two.  Angle got up and kicked Malenko then went for a suplex but Malenko dropped down the back and hit a back suplex on Angle.  This would be a very mat oriented match and technical wrestling match.  There was little brawling in this one.  The closing moments of the match would see Angle go for a DDT but Malenko countered it with a northern lights suplex.  Malenko then signalled for the Texas Cloverleaf and locked Angle in!!!  Angle struggled then finally made it to the ropes.  Angle then reached into the corner and loaded up his fist with a gold medal.  Malenko came in and Angle cranked him with the loaded fist.  Angle then hit the Angleplex on Malenko for the one-two-three!  Kurt Angle has stolen a win over Dean Malenko.

WINNER: Kurt Angle in 5:32.

Rating: ** 3/4

Afterwards, Booker T hit the ring and would kick Angle a few times then drill him with the Neckwrecker (Bookend).  Angle's antics have pushed the former IC Champion, Booker T to his limit.  Booker T grabbed the mic...

Booker T:  "Kurt Angle ... It's on like a neckbone now, sucka and save the drama for your mama cause it ain't gonna stop until that Intercontinental Title is back around my waist."

We cut backstage where Goldberg was arriving and walking towards the reason when all of a sudden Chris Jericho got in his face then from behind Mike Awesome jumped Goldberg.  Jericho and Awesome pounded on Goldberg before WPW officials and Masato Tanaka broke them away...

Match #3: Kidman v. Jeff Hardy - King Of Kings First Round.  "The Kings" by Run DMC brought Kidman out to the ring.  Kidman reminded us that he is 'The Man' because he retired 'The Man' on his way to the ring.  Then, "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit blared over the PA as Jeff Hardy of The Hardy Boyz made his way out to the ring.  Hardy and Kidman locked up with Kidman sending Hardy into the ropes.  Hardy would leapfrog over Kidman then go for a clothesline but Kidman ducked then caught Hardy coming off the ropes in a spinebuster bomb for an early near fall.  Kidman then hit a backbreaker on Hardy for another two count.  Kidman then would lay into Hardy with some chops but Hardy came out with punches then sent Kidman across the ring, ran in and nailed Kidman with a leg lariat.  Hardy followed that up with a rocker dropper then went for a ropeflip moonsault but Kidman rolled to the outside and out of the way.  Kidman then lept onto Hardy with a plancha.  This high flying contest went back and forth with many near falls.  The closing moments of the match would see Hardy hit Kidman with a snap suplex then went up top but Kidman got to his feet and climbed up top for a superplex but Hardy shoved Kidman down to the canvas and lept off with the Swanton Bomb but Kidman rolled out of the way.  Kidman then nailed a spinebuster bomb on Hardy but didn't hold on for the cover.  Instead, Kidman headed up top and nailed the Shooting Star Press for the one-two-three!  Kidman scores a win in an amazing match over Jeff Hardy.  Kidman will face Chris Benoit in the Quarterfinals...

WINNER: Billy Kidman in 5:21.

Rating: *** 1/2

Match #4: Too Cool v. Latino World Order.  "Rump Shaker" by W-n-E brought Too Cool out to the ring first.  Scottie Too Hottie and Grandmaster Sexay have been in a slump ever since Rikishi turned his back on them and there has been tension between Scottie and Grandmaster.  Then, "La Raza" sounded over the loudspeakers as Eddy Guerrero and Juventud Guerrera of the Latino World Order headed out to the ring.  This would be a solid fast paced match between the two teams.  The closing moments of the match would see Juventud go for a springboard spinning leg lariat on Sexay but Sexay moved.  Sexay then tried a forward russian legsweep but Juventud countered it with a side suplex.  Juvy then signalled for the Juvy Driver but out of the back came 'Double J' Jeff Jarrett with a guitar.  Jarrett lined up Juvy but Juvy moved and Jarrett hit Grandmaster Sexay by accident.  Eddy Guerrero threw Jarrett out of the ring as Juventud hit the Juvy Driver on Grandmaster for the three count!  The LWO takes the win with an inadvertant assist by Jarrett.

WINNERS: Latino World Order in 4:50.

Rating: *** 1/4

Afterwards, Jarrett tried to apoligize to Grandmaster Sexay but Sexay was pissed off and wouldn't accept the apology and went off on Jarrett until Scottie stepped in between them and said they all need to work together to take care of the LWO.

We headed backstage where Michael Cole was with Trish Stratus and T&A...

Trish:  "The Acolytes may appear to be tough but they've proven themselves to be cowards by only accepting a Non-Title match with my men.  Acolytes, you know that you can't beat my men, Test and Albert, and after they beat you, I want a title match and when I want something I get it."

Match #5: Triple H v. Rikishi - King Of Kings First Round.  "ONE! TWO! ZIS ON?!" sounded as 'The Game' Triple H emerged from the entrance and made his way to the ring.  Then, "L.A. L.A. [Inst.]" by C.N.N. blared over the loudspeakers as Rikishi headed out to the ring.  The fans didn't like either man but seemed to hate Triple H more.  The two locked up with Triple H sending Rikishi into the ropes but Rikishi came off with a big avalanche splash sending Triple H to the mat.  Rikishi then hit a savate kick on Triple H.  Rikishi went for a butt splash but Triple H rolled out of the way.  Triple H then went into the offensive as he brawled and worked over Rikishi.  The match went back and forth with several near falls.  The closing moments of the match would see Triple H go for the Pedigree but Rikishi countered it with a backdrop.  HHH pulled himself up in the corner and Rikishi came in with a big backsplash then went for the Rikishi Driver but Triple H fell down the back of Rikishi and hit a low blow.  Triple H then hit the Pedigree for the one ... two ... THREE!  Triple H moves on to the Quarterfinals...

WINNER: Triple H in 5:18.

Rating: *

Match #6: WPW World Tag Team Champions, The Acolytes v. T&A - Non-Title.  "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath blasted over the loudspeakers as the WPW World Tag Team Champions, The Acolytes headed out to the ring to a good pop.  "Shock" by Fear Factory would then bring out Trish Stratus and her team of T&A, Test and Albert.  This match would be all power between the two teams as they jockied for position.  This one wasn't pretty at all as the two teams just beat the hell out of eachother and seemed to enjoy the fight.  The closing moments of the match would see Faarooq hit the Dominator on Albert.  Trish then got up on the apron and distracted the referee.  Test came in from behind with a chair and cranked Faarooq in the back of the head.  Albert then hit a Double Chokeslam on Faarooq and Test came off the top with his Diving Elbowdrop.  Albert nailed Bradshaw off the apron as the referee came over and counted Faarooq down ... one ... two ... THREE!  T&A have upset the World Tag Team Champions!  T&A quickly left as The Acolytes were none too pleased...

WINNERS: T&A in 3:56.

Rating: 1/2*

We returned with a shot of a $ sign as "Money, Cash, Hoes" was heard in the background.  We pulled back to see a man with his head down wearing a green shirt, hat and a pair of shades.  The man then began speaking...

"I am the fastest rising, most exciting, talented prospect in the sport of wrestling today.  I am the future of this industry and the one true shining star of this sport.  Unfortunatly for my previous employers they realized that too late and that is why I have come here to WPW where I will not let anyone hold me back.  Next week, the premiere debut in WPW will happen when I defeat Jeff Jarrett and show the world just how great I am.  I'm everything that I say I am and more and the world will find out [turns around showing his face] that Kid Kash is MONEY."

Match #7: Sting v. Booker T - King Of Kings First Round.  The winner of this next matchup will go onto the Quarterfinals to face Triple H.  "Seek And Destroy" sounded as Sting made his way out to the ring to a big pop from the crowd.  Then, "Party Up" by DMX blared over the loudspeakers as Booker T headed out.  We saw Booker T earlier in the evening when he laid out Kurt Angle.  Sting and Booker T locked up with Booker whipping Sting into the ropes then missing an elbow smash but connecting with a savate kick.  Booker T then tried to whip Sting into the ropes again but Sting reversed it and caught Booker with an inverted atomic drop.  Sting worked over Booker a bit then tried a vertical suplex but Booker T blocked it then took down Sting with a clothesline.  Booker T sent Sting into the ropes and hit a powerslam for two.  Booker T then went up top and tried a Missile Dropkick but Sting moved.  Sting hit some chops and punches followed by a big gorilla press slam for a two count.  This would be a really good and intense match between two of the more popular wrestlers in the WPW.  The closing moments of the match would see Booker T go for the Neckwrecker but Sting hit some elbows and shoved Booker T into the ropes but Booker T came off with a Harlem Sidekick but Sting ducked then knocked Booker to the outside with a clothesline.  The ref started counting but Sting didn't want the referee to count Booker T out.  Then, Kurt Angle snuck out to ringside and would quickly hit the Angleplex on Booker T and run out through the crowd.  Sting saw this and was upset that Angle interfered but shook his head as to say, "What am I gonna do?" then went to the outside and rolled Booker T in.  Sting made the cover for the one ... two ... THR ... NO!  Booker kicked out!  Sting picked up Booker T and drilled him with the Scorpion Death Drop for the win.  Sting will face Triple H in the Quarterfinals...

WINNER: Sting in 5:35.

Rating: ** 3/4

We cut to a split screen with Goldberg and Masato Tanaka walking through the halls on one side and Chris Jericho and Mike Awesome leaving their dressing room on the other side.  Our Main Event tag team match is next...

Main Event: Goldberg & Masato Tanaka v. Chris Jericho & Mike Awesome.  'D A N G U N' brought Masato Tanaka out to the ring first.  Ever since joining WPW a few weeks ago, Masato Tanaka has established himself as a premier player in the WPW and his alignment with wrestlers such as Goldberg and Sting has catipulted the young mans career.  Then, 'INVASION' hit as Goldberg stalked his way to the ring.  Finally, 'Break Down The Walls' hit without the countdown and out came the WPW World Heavyweight Champion, "Y2J" Chris Jericho and his 'Insurance Policy' Mike Awesome.  Goldberg and Tanaka were ready for a fight but Jericho and Awesome abstained until the bell rang.  Tanaka and Jericho started things out but Jericho quickly tagged in Mike Awesome.  This would be a solid main event with Jericho evading Goldberg for the majority of the match not wanting to hook up with 'Da Man' anymore while Mike Awesome and Masato Tanaka were as rough and hard hitting as always.  The closing moments of the match would see Goldberg and Jericho going at it.  Goldberg would attempt a press slam but Jericho dropped down and hit a faceslam.  Jericho then went for the Lionsault but Goldberg rolled out of the way.  Goldberg sprung up then nailed Jericho with the SPEAR!  Jericho fell back into his corner and tagged in Awesome.  Awesome came in but Goldberg drilled him with a spear then would tag in Masato Tanaka and head to the outside to continue punishing Jericho.  Tanaka pulled Awesome up to his feet and nailed the ROARING ELBOW on Awesome then cradled him up for the pin ...

      1...

            2...

...3! 3!  Masato Tanaka has scored the pinfall on Mike Awesome to win this tag team contest!

WINNERS: Goldberg and Masato Tanaka in 8:08.

After the match, Goldberg press slam Jericho onto the announcers table then grab the World Heavyweight Title belt.  Goldberg got back into the ring and held it over his head as the show came to a close...
