WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 - August 6 / 2000

-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-

The show opened with a highlight package from last week's show where eight men advanced into the King Of Kings Tournament by winning qualifying round matches; Jeff Hardy, Kidman, Rikishi, Chris Benoit, Booker T, Sting, Papi Chulo, and Triple H.  This week eight more men will advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the King Of Kings Tournament.  We also saw clips of Chris Jericho saying that Goldberg will not get a rematch because he's not championship material then Goldberg came out and chased Chris Jericho out through the crowd to end the show.

"Spit It Out" by Slipknot played in the background as the WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 graphic comes up on the screen then fades away but not completely as a fast paced montage of WPW action including; Jeff Jarrett KO'ing Rikishi with a guitar, The Acolytes Double Team Power Bombing X-Pac, Sting hitting a Scorpion Death Drop on Ric Flair, Kurt Angle hitting the Angleplex on DDP, Chris Jericho with Eddy Guerrero in the Walls Of Jericho, a Swanton Bomb by Jeff Hardy on Shane Helms, Ric Flair with Sting in the Figure Four Leglock, Triple H hitting the Pedigree on Ken Shamrock, Billy Kidman plastering Ric Flair in the head with a chair, Goldberg spearing Triple H and much, much more.  The WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 logo fades back into full then explodes...

'INVASION' hit right as we entered the arena and Goldberg stormed through his pyro and into the ring where he took a microphone...

Goldberg:  "Chris Jericho, the world knows that you couldn't defeat me at International Incident without the help of Mike Awesome and we all know that the reason you won't give me a rematch is that your scared ... running scared.  You can run from me, you can hide from me but you see this [pulls a roll of paper from his back pocket] this right here gives me your ass in the ring at King Of Kings with the World Heavyweight Title on the line!  However, Jericho, I can't wait until then I want a piece of you right here ... TONIGHT!  Now show how much of a champion you say you are and bring your prissy ass out to the ring right now!"

Chris Jericho comes on the big screen...

Chris Jericho:  "Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on a minute there Greenberg.  Y2J is the World Heavyweight Champion and I call the shots aronud here not you.  Normally, I'd come down there and give you the Y2J beating of your life but tonight, I've got championship duties to attend to.  Such as finding how the hell a bald headed jackass like you got another shot at Y2J when you're simply not championship material.  I promise this to you and to all my Jericholics, Greenberg, you will never Eh...eh...EVER be World Champion, A-GAIN!"

Goldberg:  "Jericho, wipe that yellow streak off your back because if you're not gonna come out here then I'm coming back there to kick your ass because YOU'RE NEXT!"

Goldberg headed up the entrance way towards the back while we went to the announcers table.  Scott Hudson informed us that we'd be keeping a camera on Goldberg incase he catches up with Y2J.  Hudson and Terry Taylor would run down the show which includes eight KoK Tournament Qualifyers, a Television Title defense by Dean Malenko against Booker T plus much, much more...

Opening Match: Lash LeRoux v. Albert - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  'The Ragin' Cajun' Lash LeRoux headed out to the ring first then "Shock" by Fear Factory blared over the loudspeakers as Trish Stratus led Albert out to the ring.  Albert would dominate LeRoux early on in the match with some vicious powerhouse offense until LeRoux made a comeback.  The closing moments of the match would see LeRoux go for the Whiplash but Albert droppped out then nailed Lash with a big boot.  Albert followed that up with a torture rack drop and went for a cover but 'Ironman' came over the loudspeakers and Albert stood up looking at the entrance but no one walked out.  LeRoux came from behind and rolled up Albert hooking the tights for the one..two..THREE!  LeRoux upsets Albert!

WINNER: Lash LeRoux in 3:29.

Rating: 1/4*

Afterwards, Albert got up and would go for another big boot on LeRoux but LeRoux ducked and got out of the ring.  The Acolytes then walked out of the entrance laughing at Albert in the ring...

"Stress" by Godsmack blasted over the loudspeakers as 'The Worlds Most Dangerous Man' Ken Shamrock, 'The Canadian Crippler' Chris Benoit, and 'The Shooter' Dean Malenko all headed out to the ring where Benoit took a microphone...

Chris Benoit:  "After that punk, Kidman, got lucky and retired 'The Nature Boy' it left everyone wondering what would happen to The Four Horsemen.  Well we're out here tonight to tell you what's going to happen.  We will continue to fight together, we will continue to watch eachothers backs but there's no Horsemen without Ric Flair so tonight, officialy, this version of The Four Horsemen comes to an end.  Now onto some other business..."

Dean Malenko:  "Last week, Booker T you narrowly defeated me to qualify for the King Of Kings Tournament and when someone can beat me then I'm impressed and tonight I want a chance to redeam myself and that comes in the form of a WPW Television Title shot for you, Booker T."

Ken Shamrock:  "Hardcore Holly, tonight you stand in my way to becoming the King Of Kings and when someone gets in my way, they get hurt."

Match #2: Masato Tanaka v. Steve Blackman - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  'D A N G U N' brought Masato Tanaka out to the ring first for our next matchup.  Then, "Eye For An Eye" by Soulfly blared over the loudspeakers as "The Lethal Weapon" Steve Blackman headed out to the ring.  Tanaka debuted at International Incident accepting the challenge of Mike Awesome then later in the night helping out Goldberg.  Steve Blackman was injured over a month ago by Al Snow and only returned to gain his revenge on Snow at I.I.  This would be a very rough and physical match which is the style of both men.  The closing moments of the match would see Tanaka go for a Swinging DDT but Blackman threw him off.  Blackman then went for his Jumping Front Kick but Tanaka ducked.  Blackman landed on his feet then tried a suplex on Tanaka but Tanaka dropped down the back and hit a release german suplex.  Tanaka waited for Blackman to get up and connected with the ROARING ELBOW for the one ... two ... THREE!  Masato Tanaka pulls out the hard fought win over Steve Blackman to qualify for the tournament.

Match #3: Grandmaster Sexay v. Steven Regal - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  "Rump Shaker" by WnE blasted through the loudspeakers as Grandmaster Sexay danced out to the ring.  Then, "British Ballad" sounded as 'Lord' Steven Regal made his way out to the ring with his nose up in the air.  This would be a solid mat wrestling match between the two men with Regal showing that he's a veteran and very ring savvy.

The closing moments of the match would see Regal working over the neck of Grandmaster until Regal went for a european uppercut but Sexay jumped back then hit some shots on Regal followed by a superkick.  Sexay then headed up top and went for the Hip Hop Drop but Regal rolled out of the way.  Regal then slapped on the Regal Stretch and Sexay would have to tap out giving Regal the win.  Steven Regal advances to the tournament while Grandmaster Sexay was none too pleased with himself.

We cut backstage where Commissioner Ted Dibiase was speaking with a road agent when Triple H and Road Dogg walked up to him...

Triple H:  "Dibiase, last week you tried to pit us against eachother and break up D-Generation X but obiviously that didn't happen.  We followed your instructions like the model employees that we are and tonight I want a reward, I want a World Title shot!"

Dibiase:  "So you say you two are still the best of buddies?  You made it through that match and yes, you did follow my orders so I'm going to reward both of you with a World Title shot tonight.  You, Triple H, and you, Road Dogg will get a shot at the World Tag Team Titles when you face The Acolytes here tonight..."

Triple H:  "You know that's not what I meant but fine, tonight, you've got yourself new World Tag Team Champions..."

Tommy Rogers - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  We returned with Tommy Rogers making his way out to the ring for our next matchup.  Then, "Awesome" by Reckless Fortune blasted through the loudspeakers as Mike Awesome stalked his way towards the ring with a table.  This match will be contested under Street Fight Rules as all Awesome's matches are.  This match would be all Mike Awesome as he just killed poor Tommy Rogers.  Awesome would use a Running Awesome Bomb followed by an Awesome Splash to finish off Tommy Rogers and advance into the King Of Kings Tournament.  Mike Awesome is a dominant force and should hard to stop in the tournament.

Eddy Guerrero - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  "Shock" by Fear Factory blasted through the loudspeakers as Trish Stratus led Test out to the ring.  Then, "La Raza" sounded as the leader of the LWO, Eddy Guerrero headed out to the ring.  Guerrero would have to stay quick against the bigger and more powerful Test.  Test also showed a lot of quickness in his own right in this one.  The closing moments of the match would see Eddy go for a frankensteiner but Test countered it with a diving powerbomb.  Test then headed up top for his Flying Elbowdrop but Eddy grabbed the referee and hid behind him, distracting him.  Juvy and Papi then bolted out and pulled Test to the outside and began beating on him until The Acolytes ran out and took out Papi and Juvy then Bradshaw nailed Test with a Clothesline From Hell and rolled him into the ring.  Eddy Guerrero then connected with the Frog Splash for the one...two...THREE!  Eddy Guerrero advances...

WINNER: Eddy Guerrero in 5:15.

"My Hero" by Foo Fighters sounded as the WPW Intercontinental Champion, 'The American Hero' Kurt Angle walked out of the entrance with a microphone..

Kurt Angle:  "Thank you, thank you.  Please, hold your applause for a moment as your Olympic Hero and new Intercontinental Champion has arrived.  At International Incident, I quite handily defeated Booker T to become Intercontinental Champion and for some reason that must have angered a higher-up in WPW because I was not booked for last weeks program.  Now that is simply unacceptable.  I stand here an Olympic Gold Medalist, an I-C Champion and an American Hero and I simply am not booked for last weeks program?  I wish it wasn't but that's true.  But I do not hold any grudges and I'm going to look forward to defending this championship against all credible contenders and of course, beating them, it's true, it's true."

Then from behind, Booker T came out and nailed Angle with a Harlem Sidekick.  Booker T pulled Angle up then planted him with a Bookend on the stage.  Booker T would then pick up the microphone...

Booker T:  "Consider that an open invitation for an Intercontinental Title matchup, sucka.  Anywhere, any place, anytime, that belt is coming back around my waist, dig it!"

Hardcore Holly - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  "Stress" by Godsmack blasted over the loudspeakers as 'The Worlds Most Dangerous Man' Ken Shamrock made his way out to the ring.  Then, "Dirty Deeds" by AC/DC brought Hardcore Holly out to the ring.  This would be a brawl between the two men back and forth with Holly taking Shamrock to the outside.  This was a close match but in the end Shamrock was able to get Hardcore Holly in the Ankle Lock and as tough as Holly is, he couldn't stand the pain and tapped out.  Shamrock qualifys for the King Of Kings Tournament..

WINNER: Ken Shamrock in 5:09.

Rating: ** 1/2

We cut backstage again where Chris Jericho was breathing heavy and getting water from the cafeteria.  We saw Goldberg sneak up behind Jericho but Jericho didn't see him.  Jericho turned around and Goldberg grabbed him.  Jericho would then grab his glass of water and smash it over Goldberg's head.  Jericho then bolted and Goldberg soon gave chase.  Jericho ran deep into the crowd and Goldberg stopped as he lost track of Jericho...

Juventud Guerrera - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  "The Kings" by Run DMC blared over the loudspeakers as X-Pac made his way out to the ring for our next matchup.  Then, "La Raza" sounded as the Latino World Order's Juventud Guerrera headed out.  This would be an awesome match between the two high flyers.  Lots of back and forth action and high flying excitement.  The closing moments of the match would see X-Pac hit a series of kicks then go for a roundhouse kick but Juvy ducked, kicked X-Pac then would drill him with a running lyger bomb for a near fall!  Juventud then went up top for the 450 Splash but X-Pac caught up with him and crotched him on the top.  X-Pac went up and would hit the X-FACTOR from the top!  X-Pac made the cover for the one...two...THREE!  X-Pac advances in a great match over Juventud Guerrera.

Match #9: Dean Malenko (c) v. Booker T - WPW Television Title.  We had our first of two championship matches as "Party Up" by DMX blared over the PA and out came Booker T.  The former I-C Champion is looking to capture the Television Title tonight after defeating the champion last week in a Non-Title bout to Qualify for the KoK Tournament.  Then, "Change" by Deftones brought out the WPW Television Champion, 'The Shooter' Dean Malenko.  Malenko admitted his loss to Booker T last week and responded by giving Booker a TV Title shot tonight.  This would be another great match much like last week.  The closing moments of the match would see Malenko go for a suplex on Booker but Booker blocked it and hit a spinebuster slam.  Booker T then headed up top for a Missile Dropkick but he saw KURT ANGLE running out which distracted him.  Malenko went up and tried a superplex but Angle came into the ring and threw Malenko down onto the mat then went up and hit a belly-to-belly superplex on Booker T.  Angle followed that up with the Angleplex on Booker T then left the ring as the referee threw out the match.  Malenko wasn't pleased and went after Angle but Angle ran away.
