WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 - July 30 / 2000

-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-

The program opened with montage of still footage recapping the events of last night's Pay-Per-View, International Incident, set to Limp Bizkit's "Now I Know Why You Hate Me".  Mike Awesome came out unscheduled to open the show and demanded an opponent and got Masato Tanaka, his arch rival.  Tanaka and Awesome had a rough Street Fight ending with Awesome taking the win.  Eddy Guerrero would join in with Juventud Guerrera and Papi Chulo as they beat down Jeff Jarrett forming the 'Latino World Order'.  Sting beat Al Snow in a close match.  Afterwards, Steve Blackman returned and laid out Snow.  In the Steel Cage, it was Ken Shamrock and Dean Malenko overcoming Road Dogg and X-Pac to take the win.  Kurt Angle would narrowly defeat Booker T to become the new WPW Intercontinental Champion.  The Acolytes did it this time and became WPW World Tag Team Champions defeating The Hardy Boyz.  Chris Benoit had Triple H beat in a **** affair but the referee was down.  Triple H drove Benoit through the announcers table with the Pedigree to take the win.  The Career Vs. Hair match went to a 30 Minute draw until Commissioner Dibiase ordered the match to continue and it did.  Flair had the match won with the Figure Four but the referee was out and when he got woken up Kidman drove Flair's head into a chair with a swinging bulldog then hit the Shooting Star Press for the win.  Flair was very emotional after the match and gave the fans one last 'WHOOOOOOO!' before leaving.  In the Main Event, Mike Awesome would hold down Goldberg's leg allowing Chris Jericho to get the three count and become the new World Heavyweight Champion.  Jericho, Awesome and Al Snow triple teamed Goldberg more after the match until Sting and Masato Tanaka made the save but Jericho is the new champion.  That brings us here tonight, less then 24 hours later for WPW Sunday Night...

We cut to the arena entrance where D-Generation X minus the injured X-Pac were entering...

Triple H:  "You know, after last night, even if you [Road Dogg] and X-Pac didn't get the job done, I put Chris Benoit out and Kidman retired Ric Flair.  We should be celebrating but that damn Commissioner Dibiase is out to get us again.  There's no way we're doing this, no way!"

"Spit It Out" by Slipknot played in the background as the WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 graphic comes up on the screen then fades away but not completely as a fast paced montage of WPW action including; Jeff Jarrett KO'ing Rikishi with a guitar, The Acolytes Double Team Power Bombing X-Pac, Sting hitting a Scorpion Death Drop on Ric Flair, Kurt Angle hitting the Angleplex on DDP, Chris Jericho with Eddy Guerrero in the Walls Of Jericho, a Swanton Bomb by Jeff Hardy on Shane Helms, Ric Flair with Sting in the Figure Four Leglock, Triple H hitting the Pedigree on Ken Shamrock, Billy Kidman plastering Ric Flair in the head with a chair, Goldberg spearing Triple H and much, much more.  The WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 logo fades back into full then explodes...

We headed to the announcers table where Scott Hudson and Terry Taylor welcomed us to the show and displayed a graphic of tonights Qualifying Round Matches for the King Of Kings Tournament.  There will be another set next week then the first round of the tournament will be held on Television with those winners advancing to the King Of Kings Pay-Per-View where the Quarterfinals, Semi-Finals and Finals will be held.  Plus, the new WPW World Champion, Chris Jericho will be here tonight and more..

Opening Match: Jeff Hardy v. Bradshaw - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit brought Jeff Hardy out to the ring first.  Then, "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath blasted through the loudspeakers as 1/2 of the new World Tag Team Champions, Bradshaw headed out to the ring.  Last night at I.I., The Acolytes defeated The Hardy Boyz to become the new World Tag Team Champions now tonight Jeff Hardy has a chance for revenge in singles action drawing Bradshaw in the Qualifying Round.  Hardy kept the pace quick against the big Bradshaw while Bradshaw tried to overpower and throw around the smaller Hardy.  The closing moments of the match would see Bradshaw go for the Clothesline From Hell but Hardy ducked and dropkicked Bradshaw sending him to the floor.  Then, Trish Stratus walked out of the entrance and distracted the referee as Test and Albert jumped over the guardrail and would drill Bradshaw with a power bomb and neckbreaker combonation.  T&A rolled Bradshaw into the ring then headed off.  Jeff Hardy went up top and hit the SWANTON BOMB on Bradshaw for the one...two...three!  Jeff Hardy advances thanks to some unasked help from T&A..

WINNER: Jeff Hardy in 5:17.

Rating: ** 1/2

"The Kings" by Run DMC blared over the loudspeakers as D-Generation X's 'The Game' Triple H, Kidman and Road Dogg headed out to the ring for an interview...

Kidman:  "Last night, I retired Ric Flair.  I, Kidman, retired Ric Flair.  Incase some of you missed that, I *RETIRED* Ric Flair.  Yes, that's right, no more Ric Flair, no more Nature Boy because last night, his career came to an end at my hands.  The rickity old space mountain has been shut down for good and 'The Denture Boy' can now go home for good.  Now that makes me, 'The Man'.  Moving on to the King Of Kings Tournament, tonight Crash Holly, you're nothing to 'The Man' and I'm going to humilate you just like I humiliated Ric Flair.  Then, The Man will move on and become the King of Kings..."

Road Dogg:  "Whoa...Whoa...Whoa...Kid-man, you may have put the lid on the trashy career of the Nature Boy but as for the King Of Kings, we may all bleed DX Green but that King Of Kings is the D-O-Double G's."

Triple H:  "That would mean that you'd have to beat 'The Game' right here tonight because that son of a bitch Commissioner, Ted Dibiase has put us against eachother in attempt to dismantle the most elite force in wrestling today, DX.  As for last night, I walked into Chris Benoit's home country and I beat his ass from bell to bell and damn near crippled, The Crippler.  Benoit, you may be great but you weren't good enough, you're not in my league, Benoit and I proved once again that I am just that damn good.  And because I am that damn good, the King Of Kings is mine.  Except for the fact that the brackets need to be redrawn because there's no way that we're facing eachother tonight..."

Ted Dibiase appears on the big screen from his office...

Dibiase:  "Triple H, Road Dogg, I don't know if you're AFRAID of eachother or you just don't have the guts to get it on tonight but if either of you want a shot at winning the King Of Kings, you'll wrestle here tonight or you're BOTH out of the tournament!"

D-Generation X was left mad in the ring as we cut to a commercial break...

Match #2: Crash Holly v. Kidman - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  We returned with Kidman still in the ring but the rest of DX had left ringside.  Then, "Dirty Deeds" by AC/DC brought Crash Holly out to the ring to take on Kidman.  This would be a fast paced high flying match between the two men in which Kidman was in control of for the most part.  The announcers played up that fact that as much as they didn't like it, Kidman retired Ric Flair at International Incident.  The closing moments of the match would see Kidman whip Crash Holly into the ropes and went for a spinebuster bomb but Crash countered it with a dropkick.  Crash then went up top for the Crashcanrana but Kidman countered it with a sitdown power bomb.  Kidman headed up top and connected with the Shooting Star Press for the one, two, three.  Kidman qualifies for the King Of Kings Tournament...

WINNER: Kidman in 3:05.

Rating: ** 1/2

We headed backstage where Michael Cole got some comments from Grandmaster Sexay and Scottie Too Hottie, Too Cool...

Scottie:  "The glasses come off tonight because after Rikishi stabbed us in the back and I got him in a match tonight, the dancing, the fun, the good times are put aside for tonight and I'm getting some revenge on that fatass."

Grandmaster:  "Rikishi, if it wasn't for us you'd still be trying to make a difference or shrink some heads and now you think you're a big shot?  Well it's time we give you a reality check..."

Match #3: Rikishi v. Scottie Too Hottie - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  "L.A. L.A. [Instrumental]" by CNN blared over the loudspeakers as Rikishi walked out to the ring to jeers from the crowd.  Then, "Rump Shaker" by Wreckx-N-Effectx brought Scottie Too Hottie out to the ring.  Scottie charged the ring and went right at Rikishi starting off the match.  Rikishi countered Scottie's early offensive flury with a big headbutt.  Rikishi pounded on Scottie and dominated him for much of the match aside from a few offensive fluries from Scottie.  The closing moments of the match would see Rikishi go for a superkick but Scottie ducked out of the way then dropkicked the knee of Rikishi and followed that up with a faceslam.  Scottie would then hit the WORM!  Scottie went up top and waited on Rikishi to get up then tried his Diving DDT but Rikishi countered it with a belly-to-belly suplex.  Rikishi followed that up a backsplash in the corner and signalled for the Rikishi Driver but Grandmaster Sexay ran out with a chair and clocked Rikishi in the head which caused Scottie to be DQ'd.  Grandmaster pounded on Rikishi while Scottie was pissed about the DQ but Sexay calmed him down.  Rikishi advances on the Disqualification...

WINNER: Rikishi in 4:23.

Rating: 1/2*

We went into the parking garage as a stretch black limousine pulled up to the arena and out of it stepped Mike Awesome then the *New* WPW World Heavyweight Champion, "Y2J" Chris Jericho.  Jericho was decked out in flashy attire as Awesome watched his back.  The World Champion is here...

Match #4: Chris Benoit v. Johnny The Bull - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  "Surfacing" by Slipknot blasted over the loudspeakers as "The Canadian Crippler" Chris Benoit made his way out to the ring for our next matchup.  Then, "Millenium" by Killing Joke brought Johnny The Bull out to the ring.  Johnny The Bull showed a lot of toughness in this match as he held up against the rough style of Chris Benoit.  However, Benoit was as dangerous as usual and took apart Johnny The Bull and in the end, it would be Benoit locking Johnny The Bull in the Crippler Crossface for the submission win.  Benoit moves on into the King Of Kings Tournament with a convincing win over Johnny The Bull.  Benoit has all the tools to make it in this type of tournament...

WINNER: Chris Benoit in 3:30.

Rating: ** 1/2

We went backstage where Michael Cole caught up with Trish Stratus and T&A concerning their arrival in WPW...

Trish:  "I don't have to answer any of your questions but I'm going to tell you what we're doing here.  We're here because these two men, Test and Albert are the most dominant tag team ever formed and are the uncrowned World Tag Team Champions.  Acolytes, we issued you a warning tonight that if we don't get a title shot then there's more where that came from."

Match #5: WPW Television Champion, Dean Malenko v. Booker T  - King Of Kings Qualifying Round / Non-Title.  "Change" by Deftones sounded as the WPW Television Champion, 'The Shooter' Dean Malenko made his way out to the ring.  Malenko's TV Title will not be on the line in this one.  Then, "Party Up" by DMX blasted through the loudspeakers as the former WPW I-C Champion, Booker T headed out to the ring.  This would be a very good match with Malenko trying to wear down the knee of Booker T and limit his high impact attack.  The closing moments of the match would see Booker T go for an axe kick but Malenko moved then sweeped Booker's legs out.  Malenko then tried the Texas Cloverleaf but Booker T kicked him off, got up and went for the Harlem Sidekick but Malenko ducked but Booker T managed to get Malenko and drill him with the Bookend.  Booker T headed up top quickly and nailed the Harlem Hangover for the one ... two .. THREE!  Booker T has scored the win over the Television Champion!  Booker T advances to the next round...

WINNER: Booker T in 6:47.

Rating: *** 1/2

We went backstage where Michael Cole got some comments from 'Double J' Jeff Jarrett...

Jeff Jarrett:  "Last night, Eddy Guerrero, you set me up and stabbed me in the back but that's alright because tonight ol' Double J has his sights set on the King Of Kings and tonight I start by going through one of your Latino World Order in Papi Chulo.  Now choke on that, slapnutz."

Match #6: Big Vito v. Sting - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  Big Vito of The Mamalukes made his way out to the ring first with a big challenge on his hands as "Seek And Destroy" blasted over the loudspeakers and Sting headed out to the ring.  Sting's arm was still taped after his war with Al Snow last night.  Big Vito went right for the arm and worked over Sting for under a minute before Sting blocked out the pain and from then on this match was all Sting as he showed the same fire and edge that he did last night against Snow.  Sting would finish off Big Vito with the Scorpion Death Drop in under three minutes to advance to the tournament with authority.

WINNER: Sting in 2:43.

Rating: 3/4*

We quickly cut outside the arena where a Dodge Viper sped up to the arena and Goldberg stepped out steaming mad.  Goldberg walked towards the arena entrance shoving the camera out of the way.  The former World Heavyweight Champion has arrived...

Match #7: Papi Chulo v. Jeff Jarrett - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  'La Raza' sounded as Papi Chulo walked out of the entrance wearing the colors of the 'LWO' on his tights and a 'Latino World Order' T-Shirt.   We went back to last night at International Incident where Eddy Guerrero, Papi Chulo and Juventud Guerrera joined together under the banner of the LWO.  Then, "Cowboy" by Kid Rock blared over the loudspeakers as 'Double J' Jeff Jarrett bolted into the ring and went right after Chulo.  Jarrett was double crossed by Eddy Guerrero in the forming of the LWO.  Jarrett worked over Chulo for a minute or so until Chulo bailed to the floor then tripped up Jarrett.  Chulo would then take control on Jarrett with his arial maneuvers.  This would be a good lengthed match going back and forth between the two men.  The closing moments of the match would see Chulo go for a moonsault but Jarrett rolled out of the way then hit a single arm DDT.  Eddy Guerrero walked out of the entrance to jeers from the crowd.  Jarrett saw Guerrero and flipped and ran at Guerrero attacking him.  Guerrero didn't fight back and instead took the beating until Chulo came from behind and would hit a reverse DDT on Jarrett on the floor.  Chulo rolled Jarrett in then hit the 450 Splash for the one..two..three!  Papi Chulo advances...

WINNER: Papi Chulo in 5:58.

Rating: ** 1/2

Afterwards, Eddy Guerrero stomped on Jarrett then took a microphone as Juventud Guerrera joined them in the ring...

Eddy:  "Esto es justo el comienzo.  This is just the beginning, man.  We are the Latino World Order and we are taking what is rightfully ours, the respect that very few have given our people in this business.  The stereotypical luchadore or latino wrestler days are over and from here on out we're looking out for eachother, we're looking out for la raza, man and if you people don't like it or respect us then you can kiss my ass!"

Main Event: Triple H v. Road Dogg - King Of Kings Qualifying Round.  It was time for our final match of the evening featuring two reluctant participants.  "ONE! TWO! ZIS ON?!" sounded as 'The Game' Triple H walked out to the ring shaking his head.  Then, "The Kings" by Run DMC brought Road Dogg out who was also shaking his head.  The two men squared up then hit fists and locked up.  Triple H backed Road Dogg into the corner then the referee seperated them but Triple H nailed Road Dogg with a right hand over the referee and the two started brawling.  This would be one intense match as both men went all out even though they're friends.  The two brawled back and forth in a good match with many near falls.  The closing moments of the match would see Triple H go for the Pedigree but Road Dogg countered with a slingshot then hit some juke'n'jivin punches on Triple H followed by the shake rattle'n'roll knee drop for one ... two ... THR...NO!  Triple H got a shoulder up!  Road Dogg then went for the Pumphandle Slam but Triple H countered it with a low blow then hooked up Road Dogg and hit the Pedigree!  Triple H makes the cover ... ONE! TWO! THREE!  Triple H has advanced over Road Dogg to the tournament!

WINNER: Triple H in 7:22.

Rating: ***

Afterwards, Triple H helped up Road Dogg and Road Dogg shook his hand while saying, "You shouldn't have hit my nuts.  That wasn't cool."  The two made peace after their war much to the dismay of the crowd.

We returned and the lights went out as we counted down ... '5..4..3..2..1' and out of the pyro came the new WPW World Heavyweight Champion, "Y2J" Chris Jericho walked cockily out to the ring with the belt around his waist.  Jericho got into the ring and took a microphone...

Chris Jericho:  "Welcome to SUNDAY NIGHT WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION 'Y2J' CHRIS JERICHO!!!  I said that I was going to defeat Greenberg for the World Championship and I did, and I did for each and every one of my Jericholics across the world.  Now take a moment, Jericholics, to rejoyce because your paragon of virtue, your icon, your role model is now your World Heavyweight Champion.  And now that Y2J is done with Greenberg, I look forward to the next challenge for my World Heavyweight Title and Commissioner Dibiase, I'm sure that you'll find a sutable opponent for King Of Kings.  Now all of you five or ten Greenberg fans out there ... that think he's going to get a rematch for the title?  Well let me tell you right now, there will never eh..eh...EVER be a rematch!  And do you want to know why?  It's because Greenberg is simply not championship material..."

'INVASION...' hit and the once cocky Chris Jericho turned scared as Goldberg sprinted out of the entrance and into the ring.  Jericho quickly ducked out and Goldberg gave chase.  Jericho hopped over the guardrail as Goldberg chased the World Champion through the crowd to close the program...
