WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 - July 23 / 2000

-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-

The show opened with highlights from last week as challenges were laid out by The Four Horsemen to open up the show.  Chris Jericho 'challenged' Goldberg but instead out came Gillberg.  Mike Awesome would Awesome Bomb Gillberg then Jericho put him in the Walls Of Jericho sending a message to Goldberg.  Goldberg arrived later in the show and saw this incident and went straight to the ring calling out Jericho but Jericho declined.  Goldberg issued an open challenge for the World Title which was accepted by Al Snow.  Goldberg withstood attempted interference by Y2J to defeat Snow and retain the title.  In the Main Event, Chris Benoit got even with Triple H giving him a taste of his own medicine allowing Ric Flair to defeat 'The Game' in the main event...

"Spit It Out" by Slipknot played in the background as the WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 graphic comes up on the screen then fades away but not completely as a fast paced montage of WPW action including; Jeff Jarrett KO'ing Rikishi with a guitar, The Acolytes Double Team Power Bombing X-Pac, Sting hitting a Scorpion Death Drop on Ric Flair, Kurt Angle hitting the Angleplex on DDP, Chris Jericho with Eddy Guerrero in the Walls Of Jericho, a Swanton Bomb by Jeff Hardy on Shane Helms, Ric Flair with Sting in the Figure Four Leglock, Triple H hitting the Pedigree on Ken Shamrock, Billy Kidman plastering Ric Flair in the head with a chair, Goldberg spearing Triple H and much, much more.  The WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 logo fades back into full then explodes...

"Sprach Zarathustra" sounded and here we go with The Four Horsemen to kick off the program much like last week ...  Wait ...  NO! ... What the hell? ... It's DX dressed as The Horsemen ... Gimme a break!  Triple H walked out with a Team Canada hockey jersey and fake no teeth in mocking Chris Benoit.  Kidman walked out with a robe and a blond wig on ala Ric Flair.  X-Pac had on glasses and a wrestling singlet mocking Dean Malenko.  Road Dogg had on a UFC T-Shirt and fighting gloves ala Ken Shamrock.  DX entered the ring to boos from the crowd and Kidman took a microphone...

Kidman:  "Where is MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN WHOOOOOOOOO GEEEEEEENEEE BABY?! WHOOOO!  I am the Nature Boy! WHOOOOO!  Greatest of all-time! WHOOOOO! 17 time World Champion! WHOOOOO!  Rhodes! Funk! Brisco! Viagra! WHOOOOO!  I took 'em all, pal! WHOOOOOO!  I'm out WHOOOOOO!  here screamin' at the top of my lungs and I don't even know why. WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Kidman then held his heart and mockingly had a heart attack while still letting out 'WHOOOOOOO!'s...

Triple H:  "It .. looks like .. the .. Nature Boy .. has had a .. heart a-ttack, eh?  Well, then, I would give .. him ... CPR but ... I don't .. know how.  You know that Triple H guy, eh?  He really is that damn good, eh?  Yeah, yeah, right on, eh?"

X-Pac:  "It's the Deano Machino comin' at ya!  Yeah!  I'm just drippin' with charisma!  Oh and one more thing, I AM NOT A MIDGIT!"

Road Dogg:  "It's time .. to KNUCKLE UP! [holds up elbows]"

X-Pac:  "Kenny, those are your elbows not knuckles..."

Road Dogg:  "Ah damn .. I'm always confusin' em."

The four men take off their shirts to reval new black shirts with horses' asses with 'I II II IV' on them..

Triple H:  "[In normal voice] Four Horse's asses ... This is what we think of you, this feud has gone on long enough.  Chris Benoit, you hookey Canadian at International Incident you go one on one with The Game and you will understand that I am the Game because I am simply that DAMN GOOD!"

Road Dogg:  "Malenko ... Shamrock ... Steel cage?  The D-O-double G and the X to the P to the A to the C are gonna punk you the ffff ... hell out!"

Kidman:  "Flair ... Ric Flair ... Tonight, when you step into the ring with Chris Benoit against myself and Triple H, take a good long look around this arena because tonight, is your last WPW Sunday Night because come Saturday in Canada, your career is over."

X-Pac:  "And if you don't like that then you can suck on this, bitches!"

The DX Theme played as we went to the announcers table where Scott Hudson was disgusted while Terry Taylor was cracking up.  Hudson told us that security held back The Horsemen from charging the ring during that disgusting display.  Tonight, Dean Malenko defends the WPW Television Title against Matt Hardy, Jeff Jarrett faces Juventud Guerrera, Sting will break his silence, Jeff Hardy takes on X-Pac, we'll hear from Rikishi, in a Fatal Fourway Match it'll be The Acolytes versus The Holly Cousins versus Too Cool versus The Mamalukes, Kurt Angle faces Ken Shamrock and Triple H & Kidman team up against Ric Flair & Chris Benoit plus much, much more...

We headed to a commercial break then returned backstage where The Four Horsemen were all pissed off in their dressing room except for Ric Flair.  Flair calmed them all down and told them that tonight they make examples out of D-Generation X and to bottle up that anger and take it out on DX...

Opening Match: Dean Malenko (c) v. Matt Hardy - WPW Television Title.  Last week, Matt Hardy pinned Dean Malenko in a World Tag Team Titles Match so this week Malenko puts his TV Title on the line against Matt Hardy in a singles match.  "Surfacing" by Slipknot brought the WPW TV Champion, 'The Shooter' Dean Malenko out to the ring first.  Then the challenger, Matt Hardy came out to the sounds of "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit.  Matt is 1/2 of the World Tag Team Champions.  This would be a very good mat wrestling match between the two men as Matt Hardy was very impressive on the mat while Malenko was his usual cold and calculated self.  The closing moments of the match would see Malenko attempt a northern lights suplex on Hardy but Hardy blocked it then went for the Twist Of Fate but Malenko turned it into a belly-to-back suplex with a bridge .. ONE ... TWO ... THREE!  Malenko has picked up the win with a textbook maneuver out of nowhere on Matt Hardy to end a really good match.

WINNER: Dean Malenko in 5:01.

Rating: ***

(Dean Malenko retained the WPW Television Title.)

After the match, Road Dogg and X-Pac hit the ring and began attacking both Malenko and Matt Hardy until Jeff Hardy hit the ring and cleared house of both men.  Jeff Hardy will face X-Pac later tonight..

Match #2: Jeff Jarrett v. Juventud Guerrera.  "Cowboy" by Kid Rock sounded as 'Double J' Jeff Jarrett headed out to the ring for our next matchup.  Then, "Ebonics" by Big L blared over the loudspeakers as Juventud Guerrera headed out to the ring.  At International Incident, Juvy and Papi Chulo will face Double J and Eddy Guerrero but tonight it's Juvy versus JJ.  This would be a back and forth match with the quickness of Juventud Guerrera against the mat wrestling of Jeff Jarrett.  Jarrett brawled and tried to keep Juvy down while Guerrera electrified with his arial style.  The closing moments of the match would see Jarrett go for a power bomb on Juvy but Juvy countered it with a DDT.  Juvy would then go out to the apron and connect with a springboard spinning leg lariat!  Guerrera signalled for the Juvy Driver but out of the back ran Eddy Guerrero.  Juvy was distracted and Jarrett grabbed him from behind.  Guerrero grabbed the ring bell and entered the ring and tried to clobber Juvy with it but Juvy ducked and Eddy nailed Jarrett!  Papi Chulo bolted out and took care of Eddy while Juventud nailed the JUVY DRIVER on Jarrett for the one-two-three!  Juventud Guerrera pulls out the win over Jeff Jarrett!

WINNER: Juventud Guerrera in 3:07.

Rating: *** 1/2

"Seek And Destroy" by Metallica blasted through the loudspeakers as Sting made his way out to the ring and would take a microphone...

Sting:  "OWWWWWWWWWWW what a few weeks it has been!  Chris Jericho, at Breakdown, you did me a favor by wiping off my face paint.  You see over the past few years I've lost my edge but Jericho, you sharpened that edge right up now I'm back and more focused then ever.  Al Snow, you want to try and tear my arm out of the socket?  That's just fine because I've seen the random attacks of violence that you've been dishing out but those are all going to stop at International Incident because I'm going to give you a taste of your own medicince, see, when I lock you in the Scorpion Deathlock you'll be the one screaming for mercy.  However, if your looking for mercy from me?  You're looking at the wrong man..."

'INVASION' hit and out of the entrance walked Goldberg.  Goldberg headed into the ring and took a microphone of his own...

Goldberg:  "Sting, I've been impressed with the type of man you've been ever since you've returned and you came to my aid when I didn't even ask for help.  You stood up and proved yourself to me and that deserves something so tonight, you get rewarded with a World Heavyweight Title shot."

Sting:  "Goldberg, I can say that I'm surprised and I wasn't expecting to wrestle tonight but there's no chance that I'm passing up a shot like this so if a World Title match is what you want?  If Goldberg versus Sting is what these people want?  Then tonight, you've got it!"

  '5..4..3..2..1'

The lights returned as Chris Jericho stood on top of the stage flanked by Mike Awesome...

Chris Jericho:  "Wait just a second...Don't think I know what you're trying to do here Greenberg.  You know that you can't stand up to the mighty power of Y2J.  You know that I'm going to humilate you at International Incident so you're trying to drop the title to Sting here tonight and get out of our match but that's OK, big guy, whether it's you or Sting, that belt is going around the waist of Y2J, daddy-o."

Goldberg:  "That's where your wrong, Jericho, I have no intentions of losing this title..."

Sting:  "We'll see about that..."

Goldberg and Sting had a stare down in the ring as Jericho grinned at the top of the stage and we cut to a break.  Goldberg - Sting .. World Heavyweight Title .. TONIGHT!

Match #3: X-Pac v. Jeff Hardy.  "The Kings" by Run DMC blared over the loudspeakers as DX's X-Pac made his way out to the ring.  Then, "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit brought out 1/2 of the World Tag Team Champions, Jeff Hardy.  Hardy and X-Pac locked up with X-Pac sending Hardy into the ropes and nailing him with a kick to the midsection then a roundhouse kick knocking Hardy down.  X-Pac laid in with some more kicks then sent Hardy into the corner and nailed him with some kicks to the midsection then a kick to the face knocking Jeff down.  X-Pac then connected with the Bronco Buster on Jeff Hardy.  X-Pac was getting really cocky and pulled Jeff out for a cover but Jeff kicked out.  Jeff would then get in control and hit some crazy amazing offense on X-Pac just dominanting the rest of the match.  The closing moments of the match would see X-Pac go for a german suplex but Hardy countered it with some back elbows then would hit a Hardy Cutter on X-Pac.  Jeff then headed up top for the Swanton Bomb but Road Dogg started coming out of the entrance and Hardy slowed down and told Road Dogg to get lost.  X-Pac then got to his feet and Hardy couldn't hit the Swanton anymore but went for a diving clothesline but X-Pac turned it into the X-FACTOR!  X-Pac makes the cover for the one...two...THREE!  X-Pac has pulled out a hard fought win over Jeff Hardy.

WINNER: X-Pac in 4:21.

Rating: ** 1/2

Afterwards, Road Dogg hit the ring and helped double team Jeff Hardy until Matt Hardy ran out and cleared the ring.  Then, "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath blared over the loudspeakers as The Acolytes walked out of the entrance and Bradshaw had a microphone...

Bradshaw:  "HARDY BOYZ!  We've finished smoking all our cigars, we've drank all our beers and we can't wait until the pay-per-view to kick your asses so get ready to get your ass whupped!"

The Acolytes charged the ring and started brawling with The Hardy Boyz before WPW officials ran into the ring and broke it all up..

We headed backstage where Michael Cole was with Rikishi...

Michael Cole:  "Rikishi, the question on everyone's minds is why did you turn your back on Too Cool last week?"

Rikishi:  "First things first, shut up.  It wasn't a case of me turning my back on Too Cool, Rikishi went out and took what was his.  I made them stars, I made those two nobodies into somebodies and they aren't the least bit grateful.  I'm tired of sharing my spotlight, I'm tired of the fun and games.  It's time for Rikishi to go all business and Rikishi is going to run through EVERYONE in the WPW..."

Match #4: Rikishi v. Lash LeRoux.  "L.A. L.A. (Instrumental)" by Capone-N-Noreaga blared over the loudspeakers as Rikishi headed out to the ring to jeers from the crowd.  Rikishi had on black sunglasses and a scowl on his face.  Then, "The Ragin' Cajun" Lash LeRoux came out to face off against Rikishi.  Rikishi would nail LeRoux with a superkick then hit a belly-to-belly suplex on LeRoux.  Rikishi pulled Lash into the corner and pounded him down then would whip LeRoux across the ring and run across and nail a backsplash on LeRoux.  Rikishi then pissed off the crowd and would make a cover for the one...two...thr...Rikishi pulls up Lash.  Rikishi would then hit a sitdown splash on Lash LeRoux and this time cover him for the one-two-thr...Rikishi pulls LeRoux up again!  Rikishi would spike LeRoux with the Rikishi Driver and this time covered him, arrogantly, for the one-two-three!  Rikishi has destroyed Lash LeRoux and shown an evil side that we haven't seen from him before.

WINNER: Rikishi in 1:15.

Rating: 1/4*

Match #5: The Acolytes v. Crash Holly & Hardcore Holly v. The Mamalukes v. Too Cool - Fatal Fourway.  "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath brought The Acolytes out to the ring first.  Then, "Dirty Deeds" by AC/DC blared over the PA as Crash and Hardcore Holly made their way out.  "Millennium" by Killing Joke brought The Mamalukes out next.  Finally, Too Cool came out to "Rump Shaker" by Wreckx-N-Effectx.  This match would be elimination style.  The first elimination would come when Bradshaw connected with the Clothesline From Hell on Crash Holly for the pinfall.  The Holly Cousins are gone.  The next elimination would come when Faarooq caught Big Vito in the Dominator for the three count.  The Mamalukes are gone.  Now we're down to The Acolytes and Too Cool.  These two teams battled back and forth until Rikishi stepped out of the entrance.  This allowed Bradshaw to hit the Clothesline From Hell on Scottie Too Hottie.  The Acolytes added insult to injury by Double Team Powerbombing Scottie before pinning him.  The Acolytes are dominant on their way to facing The Hardy Boyz at International Incident.

WINNERS: The Acolytes in 4:01.

Rating: *

"My Hero" by Foo Fighters sounded over the loudspeakers as 'The American Hero' Kurt Angle emerged from the entrance for our next matchup.  But the Olympic Champion had a microphone and a few words before the match...

Kurt Angle:  "Thank you people of Detroit, Michigan, your American Hero has arrived.  In a town with no heros, finally you have a man with Integrity, Intelligence and Intensity to call your very own Hero.  Hold up, hold on.  Now I know what your thinking.  What about Barry Sanders?  Well he had the right idea and rushed the hell out of here.  What about Sergei Fedorov?  Well, if you like teenage girls then so be it but a true hero practices abstinence.  Enough about this cess pool and on to the so-called Intercontinental Champion, Booker T.  Booker T you tried to impress the world by bringing back the Harlem Hangover last week.  You know what I say?  I say I don't give a crap about your Harlem Hangover because Saturday, not only will I be sporting Olympic gold but I'll also have your Intercontinental gold around my waist, now that my friends is TRUE."

Match #6: Kurt Angle v. Ken Shamrock.  "Stress" by Godsmack then blared over the loudspeakers and Angle got worried as his opponent, 'The Worlds Most Dangerous Man' Ken Shamrock headed out to the ring.  Angle has an advantage over almost everyone when it comes to ground attacks and takedowns but Shamrock has fought men of every style and would go to the ground with Angle and then use a lot of strikes against the Olympic Gold Medalist.  This match would see a lot of counter and chain wrestling from both men along with submission attempts.  The closing moments of the match would see Angle hit an overhead belly-to-belly on Shamrock then stray from his usual attack and attempt a moonsault but Shamrock rolled out of the way.  Shamrock then locked Angle in the Ankle Lock.  Angle was close to the corner and grabbed one of his gold medals and loaded up his fist.  Angle grabbed the ropes with the other hand to break the hold.  Shamrock came over to pick up Angle and Angle hit him with his loaded fist.  Angle followed that up with the Angleplex and a cover for the one...two...THREE!  Kurt Angle has defeated Ken Shamrock.

WINNER: Kurt Angle in 4:33.

Rating: ** 1/4

Afterwards, Angle celebrated knowing that he got away with cheating until he saw Booker T approaching the ring looking pissed off at what he'd just seen.  Booker T entered the ring and threw down the I-C Title and took a microphone...

Booker T:  "Kurt Angle, I've had enough of your crap and if you think that you'll pull something this Saturday then you're one messed up motha...I ain't gonna say it.  You want the Intercontinental Title so bad?  There it is, it's yours, all you have to do is pick it up and take it."

Angle, being naive, bent over to pick up the title and Booker T hit an Axe Kick then picked up his I-C Title...

Booker T:  "You wanna get dirty?  Booker T can get dirty.  See you this Saturday, sucka."

Match #7: Triple H & Kidman v. Ric Flair & Chris Benoit.  We had one of our big double main events next as The Four Horsemen look for revenge after the stunt DX pulled earlier in the night.  Could this also be Ric Flair's final match on WPW Sunday Night?  "ONE! TWO! ZIS ON?!" was heard as 'The Game' Triple H and Kidman made their way out to the ring.  Then, "Surfacing" by Slipknot blasted through the loudspeakers as "The Canadian Crippler" Chris Benoit and "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair came through the curtain.  Benoit tried to charge the ring but Flair held him back trying to cool off the red hot Benoit.  This would be a match full of intensity as the fires continued to burn heading into International Incident where Kidman faces Ric Flair in a Hair versus Career Match and Chris Benoit takes on Triple H.  The closing moments of the match would see Road Dogg and X-Pac try to sneak down to ringside but Shamrock and Malenko ran down and knocked them both out with chair shots.  Shamrock then threw his chair to Benoit who cranked Triple H in the head.  Malenko tossed his chair to Flair and cornered Kidman and nailed Kidman in the head with the steel chair for the DQ.

WINNERS: Triple H & Kidman via DQ in 6:22.

Rating: * 1/4

Afterwards, The Four Horsemen continued to inflict a serious beating on D-Generation X as the fans went wild.  Benoit locked Triple H in the Crippler Crossface.  Ric Flair locked Kidman in the Figure Four Leglock.  Dean Malenko had X-Pac in the Texas Cloverleaf and Ken Shamrock put Road Dogg in the Ankle Lock all at the same time.  Finally Benoit let Triple H go and took a microphone...

Chris Benoit:  "So they call you The Game?  Well, the game's have ended and D-Generation X, you have just found at first hand what happens when you get The Horsemen angry, we get violent, very violent but come International Incident, it will not only be about violence but victory."

We then cut to a split shot of Goldberg and Sting making their way towards the back.  The World Heavyweight Title Main Event is next..

Main Event: Goldberg (c) v. Sting - WPW World Heavyweight Title.  "Seek And Destroy" by Metallica blared over the loudspeakers as Sting made his way out to the ring to a big pop from the crowd.  Then, 'INVASION' hit as the WPW World Heavyweight Champion, Goldberg made his entrance through the pyro and into the ring.  All of a sudden the lights went out then ...

'5..4..3..2..1'

"Y2J" Chris Jericho made his way out of the entrance alone and took a seat at ringside joining the announcers.  Goldberg eyed down Jericho then the bell sounded and the mathc was on.  Goldberg and Sting locked up with Goldberg kneeing Sting in the gut then hit another one.  Goldberg sent Sting into the ropes, picked him up over his head and military press slam!  What an impressive show of strength by Goldberg!  Goldberg looked right at Jericho after the move then went back to work on Sting sending him into the corner and charged in but Sting moved but Goldberg stopped himself from hitting the corner.  Sting responded with some kicks and backhanded chops followed by a scoop and slam.  Sting tried to drop an elbow but Goldberg moved.  Both men got to their feet and locked up with Goldberg sending Sting into the ropes but Sting came off with a dropkick knocking Goldberg down.  Sting then sat on Goldberg and started punching him then picked up Goldberg and whipped him into the ropes but Goldberg knocked down Sting with a shoulderblock.  The match wore on back and forth between the two men with lots of power and brawling.  Goldberg would attempt a piledriver but Sting countered it with a backdrop, sets up Goldberg and hits a piledriver of his own.  Goldberg slowly got up near the corner and STINGER SPLASH to the back of Goldberg!  Sting backs up as Goldberg turns himself around and another STINGER SPLASH!  Sting is backing up again all across the ring and calls out with a "OWWWWWWWW!" Goldberg runs at Sting as Sting runs and Goldberg goes for the spear but Sting jumps out of the way!  Goldberg pulls himself up with the ropes and chopblock by Sting!  Sting's got Goldberg set up and ... SCORPION DEATHLOCK!  Sting's trying to turn Goldberg over and .. HE DOES!  Sting's got it locked on in the center of the ring but Goldberg won't give it up!  AL SNOW IS COMING OUT OF THE ENTRANCE!  Jericho says, "What the hell is he doing?"  Then, Chris Jericho gets up on the apron and the referee is telling him to get outta here!  Snow's in and pulls out a fighting stick and cranks Sting in the head!  Snow nails the SNOW PLOW on Sting!  Jericho's still distracting the referee ... HERE COMES MIKE AWESOME ... AWESOME throws Snow out of the ring.  Awesome's got Goldberg and AWESOME BOMB!  Now Awesome leaves the ring!  What's going on here?!  Jericho sits back down at the announcing table and the referee sees both men down and starts a ten count.
