WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 - July 9 / 2000 -==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==-==- The show opened with highlights from last week as Chris
Jericho had the crowd against him as he bad mouthed new World Champion,
Goldberg. Jericho would then steal Goldberg's
Dodge Viper, leave and return with it painted pink as a 'surprise' for
Goldberg. Jericho escaped from the arena
declaring 'JERICHO 1 - GREENBERG 0'.
Triple H came out and cried about his loss to Goldberg being a
fluke. Chris Benoit came out and told
Triple H to accept his title loss as a man, Triple H challenged Benoit to a
fight and the two had a small brawl until Benoit locked Triple H in the
Crossface. The Game tapped out but it
wasn't a match. Ric Flair demanded that
his match with Kidman be that night and Commissioner Dibiase granted him his
request and threw in that if either DX or Horsemen interfere then their
contracts would be terminated. Flair and
Kidman did battle in an intense match with Kidman rolling up Flair out of the
Figure Four Leglock but Flair reversed the rollup for the win... "Spit It Out" by Slipknot played in the
background as the WPW Sunday Night on ESPN2 graphic comes up on the screen then
fades away but not completely as a fast paced montage of WPW action including;
Jeff Jarrett KO'ing Rikishi with a guitar, The Acolytes Double Team Power
Bombing X-Pac, Sting hitting a Scorpion Death Drop on Ric Flair, Kurt Angle
hitting the Angleplex on DDP, Chris Jericho with Eddy Guerrero in the Walls Of
Jericho, a Swanton Bomb by Jeff Hardy on Shane Helms, Ric Flair with Sting in
the Figure Four Leglock, Triple H hitting the Pedigree on Ken Shamrock, Billy
Kidman plastering Ric Flair in the head with a chair, Goldberg spearing Triple
H and much, much more. The WPW Sunday
Night on ESPN2 logo fades back into full then explodes... We panned across the crowd as fireworks went off and
Scott Hudson and Terry Taylor welcomed us to the show hyping up the main event
as on one side it will be Chris Jericho and a partner of his choice against
Goldberg and a partner of his choice. In
addition to that, Kidman will face Chris Benoit and much much more... Opening Match: Lash LeRoux v. Tommy Rogers. "The Ragin' Cajun" Lash LeRoux made
his way out to the ring to face a newcomer but a veteran, Tommy Rogers in our
first match of the evening. This would
be a good little match between the two men until the crowd's attention turned
to someone coming through the crowd.
MIKE AWESOME jumped over the guardrail and pulled a table from under the
ring as the watch went on inside.
Awesome would then throw a second table inside the ring. The former ECW World Heavyweight Champion
rolled into the ring and knocked out both LeRoux and Rogers with a double
clothesline shot. Awesome would work
over both LeRoux and Rogers for a minute then grab Rogers and drill him with a
power bomb. Awesome nailed another
lariat shot on LeRoux then took him out to the apron and SIT-DOWN AWESOME BOMB
off the apron through the table! Awesome
as just killed Lash LeRoux! Awesome then
went back into the ring and set up the table.
Awesome hit a big boot on Rogers then placed him on the table. Awesome headed up top and connected with a
big AWESOME SPLASH driving Rogers through the table. Then... RESULT: No Contest in 2:01. RATING: * 1/2 '5..4..3..2..1' "Y2J" Chris Jericho emerged from the pyro and
walked down into the ring with a microphone in hand as Mike Awesome stood
behind him... Chris Jericho:
"Goldberg, you've made several threats on the well being of Chris
Jericho and that is simply unnacceptable so I saw it fit to take out a small
'Insurance Policy' in the name of MIKE AWESOME.
Before you stain your pants, Greenberg, this man right here will NOT be
my tag team partner tonight. No, I've
went out and searched for the most dangerous man around, besides myself of
course, a man that will cripple you without reason, a man with a fuse so short
that it can be lit with a spark, and this man will be my tag team partner
tonight and this man will cripple you.
When it's all said and done, when you're shacked up in a hopsital bed
somewhere, Greenberg, that World Heavyweight Title will be firmly strapped
around the waist of 'Y2J'. Now allow me
to introduce to you my tag team partner tonight, he's not PSYCHOTIC, he's AL
SNOW!" "What Is Fight Club?" by Dust Brothers came
over the loudspeakers as the lights went out except for a 'black light'
spotlight over the entrance as the psychotic and dangerous, Al Snow stalked his
way into the ring and just stood there with his hair over his face... Chris Jericho:
"Bill Goldberg, welcome to your worst nightmare, welcome to your
personal hell, welcome to SUNDAY NIGHT JERICHO and after tonight, you will
NEVER eh..eh..EVER walk A-GAIN!" Match #2: The Acolytes v. 3Count - Number One
Contenders. "Ironman" by Black
Sabbath brought The Acolytes out to the ring and they didn't look to be in a
good mood at all. Then, 'Dance With
3Count' sounded as Shannon Moore and Shane Helms came out to the ring. The winners of this match will face the World
Tag Team Champions at International Incident.
Bradshaw and Faarooq held nothing back in this match as they just beat
the living hell out of the young 3Count.
Evan Karagias tried to interfere but was met with a big foot the face
from Bradshaw. The closing moments of
the match would see Shannon Moore go for the Shannon Slicer on Bradshaw but
Bradshaw flipped him over then nailed him with the Clothesline From Hell
folding Shannon in half. Bradshaw made
the cover for the one-two-three! The
Acolytes are the new #1 contenders. WINNERS: The Acolytes in 3:49. Rating: * After the match, Shane Helms came in but Faarooq caught
him with a spinebuster then drilled him with the Dominator. The Acolytes left the ring to a big reaction
from the crowd in respect to their ass kicking ability. We headed
backstage where Michael Cole got some comments from the WPW Intercontinental
Champion, Booker T ... Booker T:
"Kurt Angle, your nothing more then an American Punk, sucka. Sure you won Olympic Gold but you sure don't
carry yourself as a champion. Instead,
your a loud mouthed coward who decided to take a cheap shot at me, sucka. Well, Kurt, what you've done is make me mad
and that's something you don't do. At
International Incident, you will get your shot at Intercontinental gold but
brother, after the match, Booker T will still be the champion and you won't be
sporting the colors of the United States of America, no, you'll be sporting
black and blue, now can you dig it?" Match #3: Kurt Angle v. Evan Karagias. "My Hero" by Foo Fighters was heard
as 'The American Hero' Kurt Angle emerged from the entrance with a microphone
in hand... Kurt Angle:
"Booker T, I heard your comments and you normally lack it, you
showed Intelligence for once. You
recognized that I, Kurt Angle, an Olympic Gold Medalist and American Hero,
deserves a shot at Intercontinental Gold.
Tonight, Booker T, pull up a seat because your Olympic Hero is going to
make an example out of Evan Karagias and that is true." 'Dance With 3Count' was heard as Evan Karagias danced his
way out to the ring to take on Kurt Angle.
Angle dominated this matchup with Karagias as he out wrestled the
youngster. About a minute into the
match, Booker T walked out of the entrance with a chair, set it up and sat
watching the match. Angle was a little
distracted and Karagias got a near fall but Angle would go back on the
offense. In the end, Angle would finish
off Karagias with the Angleplex to score the win. WINNER: Kurt Angle in 3:05. Rating: 3/4* After the match, Angle celebrated as Booker T shook his
head. Booker T then got up from his
chair and made his way towards the ring.
Angle got scared and as Booker T got into the ring, Angle slipped out
and headed up the ramp. We went outside
the arena where Goldberg was shown arriving through the doors and Michael Cole
ran up and tried to grab some comments from 'Da Man'... Goldberg: "I
don't need a damn partner to run through that immature punk, Chris Jericho and
his psychotic henchman, Al Snow. And if
that so-called 'Insurance Policy' Mike Awesome decides to interject himself
into the match then I'm not going to have any problem running through his
ass. Chris Jericho, one thing that
you're going to learn and learn quick is that I hold NOTHING back when you're
NEXT..." Match #4: Jeff Jarrett v. Papi Chulo. "Cowboy" by Kid Rock blared over
the PA as "Double J" Jeff Jarrett made his way out to the ring for
our next matchup. Then, "Big
Pimpin'" by Jay-Z sounded as Papi Chulo headed out to the ring. Jarrett would try and ground the young high
flying Papi Chulo in this match while Chulo tried to keep the match quick and
tire out Jarrett. The closing moments of
the match would see Jarrett drill Chulo with a piledriver. Jarrett set up Chulo for another piledriver
but Chulo countered it with a backdrop.
Chulo goes up top and MOONSAULT BODYBLOCK! ONE! TWO! THREE! Papi Chulo has upset Jeff Jarrett! WINNER: Papi Chulo
in 5:57. Rating: * 1/2 After the match, Jarrett got up and nailed Chulo with a
clothesline. Eddy Guerrero hit the ring
and the two double teamed the young Papi Chulo.
Jarrett put Chulo in the Figure-Four Leglock and Guerrero went up top
for a Frog Splash when JUVENTUD GUERRERA came out of the crowd! Guerrera threw Eddy off the top rope then
broke up the Figure Four and threw Jarrett out of the ring! Juventud Guerrera has debuted here in WPW
coming to the aid of Papi Chulo! "The
Kings" by Run DMC blared over the loudspeakers as Kidman made his way out
to the ring and took a microphone.
Kidman stood on the ropes and made an 'X' with his hands as the fans
booed him. Kidman: "Last
week, Ric Flair, you may have got a lame ass three count on me but you sure as
hell didn't beat me. I still own you Ric
Flair and now, I want you one more time, one last time at International
Incident and Ric Flair, obviously the WPW isn't big enough for the both of us
so I want your CAREER on the line.
That's right, I'm going to end the career of the Nature Boy. I know you don't have the ... guts to put
your career on the line so I'm going to through in another stipulation, if I
lose, which I won't, then you can shave my head bald. CAREER versus HAIR ... RIC FLAIR versus
KIDMAN ... It will be your FINAL match.
WHOOOOO! As for Chris Benoit, you
made the mistake of crossing Triple H and tonight I'm going to take care of
you, DX-Style." Match #5: Ken Shamrock & Dean Malenko v. X-Pac &
Road Dogg - No Countouts.
"Stress" by Godsmack blasted through the loudspeakers as The
Four Horsemen's Ken Shamrock and Dean Malenko headed out to the ring for a tag
team contest. Then, "The
Kings" by Run DMC was heard as X-Pac and Road Dogg of DX made their way
out. Last week these two teams battled
to a Double Countout so this week the match will have NO COUNTOUTS. This match started out as a brawl that would
soon settle down into a tag team match.
Shamrock and X-Pac fought on the outside but their were no countouts. Shamrock got the advantage and threw X-Pac in
then nailed Road Dogg off the apron.
Shamrock tagged in Malenko who got X-Pac locked up in the Texas
Cloverleaf. Road Dogg grabbed the ring
bell, entered the ring and knocked out Malenko with the ring bell then cranked
Shamrock with it causing a DISQUALIFICATION!
Will these two teams ever have decisive winner? WINNERS: Ken Shamrock & Dean Malenko via DQ in 6:28. Rating: 3/4* Match #6: Kidman v. Chris Benoit. 'Are You Ready?' was heard as the original DX
Theme sounded and out of the entrance emerged Kidman. Kidman looked as cocky as ever as he came
down to the ring. Then, 'Surfacing' by
Slipknot blasted through the loudspeakers as "The Crippler" Chris
Benoit headed out to the ring. This
match featured two men on the cusp of superstardom here in the WPW but taking
different routes to get there. Kidman
and Benoit locked up with Benoit overpowering Kidman and sending him into the
ropes but Kidman came off with a clothesline shot on Benoit. Kidman then took Benoit down with a spinning
headscissors followed by a figure-four leglock attempt but Benoit pushed him
off. Benoit got up and would send Kidman
into the corner. Benoit opened up on the
chest of Kidman with chops then whipped Kidman across the ring and charged in
but Kidman lifted his legs and tried to catch Benoit in a hurracanrana but
Benoit held on, turned around and drilled Kidman with a devastating power
bomb. Benoit made the cover for only
two. Benoit picked up Kidman and chopped
away some more then sent him into the ropes and went for a kitchen sink but Kidman
countered it with a rollup for two.
Kidman followed that up with a swinging bulldog on Benoit. Kidman headed up top and flew off with a
flying elbowdrop for another near fall.
Kidman was in control and laid into Benoit with some chops of his own followed
by an inverted suplex on The Crippler.
This amazing match continued on back and forth for several minutes with
lots of near falls. The closing moments
of the match would see Benoit go for another power bomb but Kidman countered
out with a faceslam. Kidman went up top
for the Shooting Star Press but Benoit got to his feet and crotched Kidman on
the top. Benoit went up to the top and
tried a superplex but Kidman shoved him off.
Kidman would then connect with a flying dropkick on Benoit. Kidman made the cover for one ... two ... THR
... NO! Benoit got a shoulder up! Kidman was frustrated and rolled to the
outside and grabbed a steel chair. The
referee went to the outside and warned Kidman about using the chair. That's when TRIPLE H hit the ring and with
the referee distracted, Triple H drilled Benoit with the Pedigree and left the
ring. Kidman threw down the chair and
climbed to the top rope. Kidman nails
the SHOOTING STAR PRESS! ONE! TWO!
THREE! Kidman has defeated Chris Benoit
with an assist from 'The Game'! WINNER: Kidman in 8:32. Rating: **** Main Event: Chris Jericho & Al Snow v. Goldberg &
???. "Break Down The Walls"
blared over the loudspeakers as "Y2J" Chris Jericho emerged from the
entrance flanked by Mike Awesome. Al
Snow was several steps behind stalking his way towards the ring. Then, 'Invasion' hit as the WPW World
Heavyweight Champion, Goldberg made his entrance. After walking through the pyro, Goldberg
charged the ring and Jericho, Snow and Awesome cleared out. The three then surrounded the ring and were
ready to attack Goldberg when the lights went out! Thunder sounded through the arena and
lightning crashes were heard then ... "Seek And Destroy" by Metallica blasted through
the loudspeakers and three shots of pyro came up from the entrance and the
lights returned with Sting standing in the ring, no face paint, black pants,
and a long black coat. Jericho couldn't
believe as he thought he sent Sting away at Breakdown but he was wrong. Jericho and Snow then got into the ring and
the match was on. The four men brawled
for a minute or so with Sting and Goldberg dominating until Jericho bailed to
the floor and Sting left the ring leaving Goldberg and Snow. Snow would try to work over the leg of
Goldberg and make quick tags to Jericho.
They double teamed the World Champion for a few minutes until Goldberg
finally broke free and made the tag to Sting.
Sting came in like a house of fire until Jericho caught him with a
faceslam. Mike Awesome wouldn't get
involved for most of the match. The
closing moments of the match would see Goldberg and Jericho going at it. Goldberg pressed Jericho over his head and
went for a powerslam out of it but Jericho dropped down the back of Goldberg
and hit a side suplex. Jericho then went
for the WALLS OF JERICHO but Goldberg powered out! Jericho quickly made the tag to Al Snow. Goldberg would nail Snow with a savate kick
then throw Jericho out of the ring.
Goldberg tagged in Sting then went outside after Jericho but Mike
Awesome stood in the way of Jericho.
Goldberg started pounding on Awesome until Awesome and Jericho double
teamed Goldberg on the outside. While
this went on, Al Snow went for a cobra clutch on Sting but Sting blocked it and
nailed the SCORPION DEATH DROP! Sting
makes the cover on Snow for the one...two...THREE! Sting has made a succesful
return pinning Al Snow to win this tag team main event. WINNERS: Goldberg and Sting in 10:37. Rating: * 1/4 After the match, Sting saw Jericho and Awesome double
teaming Goldberg on the outside and went out and started working away on
Awesome. The two brawled back and forth
until Al Snow grabbed a ring step and nailed Sting's right arm. Snow drove the ring step into Sting's arm
again then locked him in a Jujigatame on the outside. Goldberg was backing Chris Jericho up the
ramp but this freed Mike Awesome to charge up from behind and nailed Goldberg
with a lariat. Awesome then set up
Goldberg at Jericho's request and would AWESOME BOMB Goldberg on the ramp! We heard Jericho say ... "JERICHO 2 -
